An exercise device (129) is configured to enable a user to interact with a trainer in real-time communication. The exercise device includes an exercise mechanism having a movable element for movement in performance of exercise by a user. Communicating with the exercise mechanism is an interface (16) adapted for gathering a first real-time signal from the user. The interface (16) communicates with a communication system for receiving a packetized second real-time signal including a synchronized control signal from the trainer. The exercise device includes an output device configured to reproduce the second real-time signal. The control signals carried by the second signal are used to control the operating parameters of the exercise mechanism in real-time.

The invention relates to an elliptical trainer including: a frame having a first end and a second end; a rocker-rod mechanism hingedly connected to the first end of the frame; a pedal mechanism connected to the frame and the rocker-rod mechanism, the pedal mechanism being linked with the rocker-rod mechanism on the frame; a resistance adjustment mechanism provided at the first end of the frame, the resistance adjustment mechanism being connected to the pedal mechanism through a transmission mechanism for adjusting the movement resistance of the pedal mechanism. In the apparatus of the invention, there are two resistance adjustment ways i.e. manual resistance adjustment and electronic-controlled resistance adjustment, the user can select any one or both according to requirements. By combining the manual adjustment and the electronic controlled adjustment, the adjustable range of movement resistance is increased, and not only a wide range resistance control is achieved, but also fine-tuning of the movement resistance can be achieved manually.

The portable system includes a control device configured to retrieve the exercise program and deliver the motivational content to the user by way of an audio delivery device, while delivering the control signals to the exercise mechanism. A sensor communicates with the control device and tracks one or more measurable parameters of the user during the user's performance of the exercise program. Data representative of the one or more measurable parameters can be delivered to the control device for delivery to the remote communication system.

A system for assisting a user in strength training with a strength training device comprises a torque source. One or more magnetorheological (MR) fluid clutch apparatuses has an input coupled to torque source to receive torque from the torque source, the MR fluid clutch apparatus controllable to transmit a variable amount of torque via an output thereof. A modulation inter face couples the output of the at least one MR fluid clutch apparatus to a force transmission of the training device. One or more sensors provide information indicative of a training action by the user. A training processor comprises a training effort calculator module for receiving the information indicative of the training action and for characterizing the training action, a training assistance controller module for determining a level of force assistance from the characterizing of the training action, and an assistance generator module for controlling the at least one MR fluid clutch apparatus in exerting the force assistance at said level on the force transmission of the training device to assist the user in the training action. A method for assisting a user in strength training with a MR fluid clutch apparatus is also provided.
