A method and apparatus for a treadmill (100) having a frameless treadbase. T he treadmill (100) is lightweight and inexpensive. A preferred embodiment features an arched deck (108). The arched deck (108) has a first end, a seco nd end, and an intermediate portion, wherein the intermediate portion is has an upward incline or convex arch. The arched deck (108) provides intrinsic cushion and incline. The arched deck (108) maintains a convex arch independe nt of any structure in the treadmill. Additionally, the arched deck (108) is connected to a front support (102) and a rear support (104), the front suppo rt (102) being independent from the rear support (104).
Abstract:
The present invention is directed to systems and methods for providing exercise devices with motivational programming. The programming includes motivational content and control signals, synchronized with the motivational content, for controlling operation of the exercise device. The motivational content includes audio and/or video designed to simulate a group exercise setting and optionally instructional and educational content for the benefit of a user. The control signals can be carried in wireless carrier signals and can include bytes of data that define changes to the value of one or more operating parameters of an exercise device. The control signals can control one or more operating parameters of one or more exercise devices, whether at once, or device specific.

Systems and methods that provide two-way communication between an exercise device and a computer device. A computer device and an exercise device employ different protocol formats and communicate through a translator device, which includes a microcontroller specifically designed to translate data or signals deliverable by different communication protocols. The exercise device, the computer device, or a user at either the exercise or computer device may initiate the communication. The enabled communication allows for such features as the performance of an automatic diagnostic analysis on the exercise device, the programming of internal parameters of the exercise device upon identifying specific components, the monitoring of any measurable parameter of the user, the providing of instructional direction and/or encouragement relating to a particular exercise routine, the controlling of the amount of resistance experienced by the user of the exercise device, and other interactions facilitated by the translator device.

Systems and methods for providing exercise devices with motivational programming (54). The present invention is particularly well suited to exercise devices that utilize one or more motors (30), and/or other electrically driven actuators to control one or more operating parameters of the exercise device. The present invention contemplates the use of programmi ng that includes motivational content, and one or more control signals (64) synchronized with the motivational content for controlling operation of the exercise device. The motivational content preferably includes audio, and/or video (56) designed to simulate a group exercise setting. In addition, the motivational content can include instructional, and educational content for the benefit of the user. The programming can be live or prerecorded, can be broadcast over available broadcast channels, cable, satellite, the inter-net or any other means suitable for transmitting audio, and/or video signals. Th e present invention also includes means for reproducing the programming, including the motivational content along with the synchronized control signa ls.
