    Abstract: A coating composition including an aqueous dispersion of a copolymerization product of a mixture of monomers including carbamate-functional and (meth)acrylic monomers, some having carboxylic acid-functionality. The monomer mixture is essentially free of hydroxyl monomer. The coating can be applied on a polycarbonate substrate. The coating composition may be a clearcoat coating composition, preferably an automotive clearcoat coating composition. The invention provides a method of producing such a coating and application on a substrate, particularly as a basecoat/clearcoat composite coating, with the coating composition of the invention preferably being at least the clearcoat of the composite coating. If the substrate is a polycarbonate, the clearcoat can be applied directly on the substrate without any primer or basecoat.

    Abstract: An improved process for forming multiple coats of finishes on a substrate by sequential (a) applying to the substrate a layer of a color basecoat composition of waterborne coating composition of an acrylic polymer latex contains pigment; (b) applying to the layer of color basecoat composition before it is fully cured a clear coat composition of an acrylic polymer having crosslinkable groups and a crosslinking agent in a volatile organic solvent and (c) subsequently simultaneously curing the basecoat composition and the clear coat composition; the improvement used therewith comprises a solvent based clear coating composition having a binder of about40-95% by weight of an epoxy acrylic polymer having at least one alkyl methacrylate having 2-12 carbon atoms in the alkyl group, and glycidyl methacrylate or acrylate and having a weight average molecular weight of about 3,000-10,000 and a glass transition temperature of about -20.degree. to +50.degree. C.; and5-60% by weight an organic polyisocyanate; wherein the clear coat when cured has a water vapor permeability value of about 1400-3200.

    Abstract: A coating method for forming a laminated coating film including a lower layer formed on a base material, an intermediate layer formed on the lower layer, and an upper layer formed on the intermediate layer, the method comprising: a preparation step of preparing a thermosetting coating material as a lower layer-coating material for forming the lower layer, preparing a thermosetting coating material as an intermediate layer-coating material for forming the intermediate layer, and preparing a thermosetting coating material as an upper layer-coating material for forming the upper layer; a formation step of forming an uncured laminated coating film by applying the lower layer-coating material, the intermediate layer-coating material, and the upper layer-coating material on the base material using a wet-on-wet technique; and a baking step of simultaneously curing the lower layer-coating material, the intermediate layer-coating material, and the upper layer-coating material by subjecting the uncured laminated coating film to a baking treatment, wherein in the preparation step, the lower layer-coating material, the intermediate layer-coating material, and the upper layer-coating material are selected so that a sum of an absolute value of a difference in shrinkage ratio between the lower layer-coating material and the intermediate layer-coating material at a late stage of the baking in the baking step and an absolute value of a difference in shrinkage ratio between the intermediate layer-coating material and the upper layer-coating material at the late stage of the baking in the baking step is 3.0% or smaller.
