Abstract: The composition contains a dispersion of oil and water, an emulsifying agent (anionic and/or nonionic) imparting electronegativity to the oily phase of the dispersion and, as stabiliser, a multivalent metal ion bonded to the electronegative oily phase and introduced in the form of a complex of a metal ion and of a polyfunctional organic ligand (for example disodium monocopper(II) citrate). This complex can, between pH 7 and 9, release metal cations to stabilise the emulsion and to prevent its degradation. The service life of cutting fluids for metal machining can thus be very considerably prolonged.

Abstract: Lubricating oil compositions suitable for use in marine diesel engines comprise 60 to 85 parts by weight of lubricating oil, 15 to 30 parts by weight of a mixture of more than 50 wt .% of a Group IIa metal overbased detergent and up to 50 wt .% of a Group Ia metal overbased detergent and 0.2 to 5 parts by weight of an antioxidant, provided the weight ratio of the overbased detergent mixture to antioxidant lies between 7.5:1 and 50:1, all parts by weight referring to total active matter of the additive. When used in loop-scavenged crosshead marine diesel engines fouling of air ports with deposits is considerably reduced and there is a satisfactory anti-wear performance.

Abstract: Prodn. of lubricating oils and greases by dispersing thickners, additives and fillers in base fluids is carried out by means of ferromagnetic particles which form a vortex under the influence of a rotating magnetic field. The ferromagnetic particles can be of a magnetically soft or hard material (e.g. carbon steel, Ni or Co/Ni alloys) with a ratio of max. to min dimension of 6-20:1. The particles are pref. protected by a polymer coating. In the case of dispersing thickeners (e.g. metal soaps), these can be formed in situ by reaction of appropriate starting materials. High quality products can be produced in treatment times of a few seconds. Energy consumption is low. The process can be operated continuously and is readily automated.
