Abstract:
Cube-corner retroreflective articles having wide observation angle performance, uniform orientation angle performance and wide angularity in multiple viewing planes are provided by very small (0.0005 inch to less than 0.0006 inch) size prism elements (10) in which pairs (10A, 10B) of such elements are tilted; preferably in a negative direction. In an alternate embodiment, retroreflective prisms are formed with windows (10F) thereon by removing a portion of the prism mold on one prism pair (10B, 10C) leaving the apex of the prism intact. In this manner smaller prisms are formed adjacent larger prisms.
Abstract:
A retroreflective article (10) has a body portion (14) and a multiple of cube-corner elements (12) that project from a rear side (20) of the body portion (14). The body portion (14) includes a body layer (18) that contains a light-transmissible polymeric material having an elastic modulus less than 7 x 10 pascals. The cube-corner elements (12) contain a light transmissible polymeric material having an elastic modulus greater than 16 x 10 pascals. A retroreflective article of this construction can be highly flexed while maintaining good retroreflective performance.
Abstract:
A method for manufacturing flexible cube corner retroreflective sheeting comprising the steps of: a) providing a tool having a molding surface; b) applying to the molding surface a volume of a lowable resin composition; c) contacting the resin composition with a first major surface of an overlay film; d) minimizing excess resin composition; e) curing the resin composition to form a sheeting comprising an array of cube corner elements bonded to the overlay film; f) removing the sheeting from the tool; and g) applyingmechanical stress to the sheeting so as to cause a fractured separation of substantially each individual cube corner element from surrounding cube corner elements. Also, flexible retroreflective sheetings comprising: a) a two-dimensional array of substantially independent cube corner elements, the array comprising a first polymetric material, and b) an overlay film having two major surfaces and comprising a second polymeric material, the array being bonded to the first major surface of the overlay film. Also safety devices incorporating such sheetings.
Abstract:
A retroreflective structure (10) having prism elements (14) and a method for making the structure (10) are disclosed. The retroreflective structure (10) is formed of an extensible, elastomeric film (12) and a rigid, non-extensible array of retroreflective prism elements (14). The array (14) is bonded to the elastomeric film (12), thereby forming a retroreflective structure (10) which can be significantly stretched without significantly diminishing the retroreflective properties of the structure.
Abstract:
The invention relates to a shaping tool for the production of a triple mirror a) with a shaping side (7) on which there are structural components (5, 6) which are periodically repeated in a plane in the form of three abutting surfaces of a cube, the spatial diagonals of which run perpendicularly to the plane; b) which is composed of a number of blades (1) of thickness (d) with two plane side surfaces and a stepped edge region in which a plurality of vertically superimposed square sides with a side length (d) are formed as part of the structural components; c) the side surfaces of the blades are interconnected and the edge regions of the blades adjoin one another; d) each blade is staggered by d/ 2ROOT 2 in relation to the neighbouring blades and e) includes an angle alpha =54.736 DEG with the plane. The invention also relates to a process for producing such a shaping tool in which a stack of blades (1) is ground into triangular grooves, and novel triple mirrors with cubic structural components, the edge length of which is shorter than 500 mu m.
