    Abstract: Un artículo retrorreflector que comprende: (a) una capa retrorreflectora que tiene primer y segunda superficies mayores, y (b) una capa de cubierta yuxtapuesta contra la primer superficie mayor, caracterizado porque: la capa de cubierta comprende una capa superficial, una capa intermedia opcional y una capa dorsal, con la condicion de que: (i) cuando la capa intermedia está presente en la capa de cubierta la capa intermedia contiene un polímero a base de fluoruro de vinilideno como un componente primario, y la capa superficial y la capa dorsal comprende cada una un polímero a base de metacrilato de metilo como un componente primario; y (ii) cuando la capa intermedia está ausente de la capa de cubierta, la capa superficial comprende a base de fluoruro de vinilideno (F) en una relacion en peso A:F de 55:45 a 95:5, y la capa dorsal comprende un polímero a base de metacrilato de metilo y un polímero a base de fluoruro de vinilideno con el polímero a base de fluoruro de vinilideno siendo el componente primario.

    Abstract: La presente invencion proporciona artículos retrorreflectores de esquina de cubo que tienen funcionamientos retrorreflector mejorado en cuando menos un plano, y de preferencia en dos o más planos.     Abstract: A relatively flexible retroreflective laminate sheet construction includes a thermoplastic web (26) a light-receiving and transmitting front side (28) and a reverse side (30) co- extensive with the front side (26), a retroreflective pattern being formed on the reverse side (30). A layer (34) is deposited on the reverse side (30) to cover selected portions of the formed retroreflective pattern with the remaining portions of the formed pattern devoid of the granular material. A layer (32) of back coating material is deposited on the reverse side to overlay the granular material (34). The back coating material contacts the remaining portions of the formed pattern and is fixedly secured thereto, thereby encapsulating the granular material between the reverse side (30) and the back coating layer (32).

    Abstract: Disclosed herein are an improved method and apparatus for continuously embossing a repeating pattern of precise detail, in particular, cube-corner type reflector elements, on one surface of a single sheet or on one surface of a laminate of transparent thermoplastic materials, to form retroreflective sheeting. A continuous embossing tool in the form of a flexible thin metal belt or cylinder has on its outer surface an embossing pattern which is the reverse of the precision optical pattern to be formed. The embossing tool is continuously moved at a predetermined speed along a closed course through a heating station where the temperature of a portion of the embossing tool is raised to be above the glass transition temperature of the sheeting or laminate and a cooling station where the heated portion of the embossing tool is cooled while in a relatively planar condition to be below that glass transition temperature. The sheeting is continuously moved at the predetermined speed from a supply thereof into engagement with the embossing pattern on the tool and Is pressed there-against continuously at a plurality of pressure points sequentially spaced along the heating station, with the one surface of the sheeting confronting and engaging the embossing pattern until the sheeting is raised above its glass transition temperature and conforms to the embossing pattern on the one face. The sheeting is maintained in engagement with the tool until the tool passes through the cooling station and the sheeting is lowered below its glass transition temperature and the pattern solidifies. The sheeting thereafter is stripped from the tool and next passed through a reheating station where the embossed sheeting is heated to an annealing temperature where the stresses formed in the thermoplastic material during embossing and cooling are relieved, while preserving and enhancing the precision optical pattern previously formed.

    Abstract: An improved roadway sign (2) comprising a light retroreflective indicia region and colored retroreflective background region is provided. The retroreflective properties of the regions are selective such that the ratio of the retroreflective brightness of the indicia to that of the background is substantially larger at observation locations within the legibility zone (8) for the sign, than the ratio is at observation locations outside (12) the legibility zone. The sign is conspicuous by virtue of the bright retroreflection and distinctive color of the background outside the legibility zone, yet is legible because of the increased contrast ratio of the indicia to the background in the legibility zone.
