Abstract: A system for remote measurement of structural forces includes a plurality of microbend transducers (14) mounted along the length of the structure (12) for microbending an optical fiber (16) in response to structural forces, such as stress acting upon an oil or gas pipeline or the like. An optical time domain reflectometer (OTDR) (18) has a light source (46) for launching a pulsed optical signal passage through the fiber and a photodetector (56) for sensing as a function of time the intensity of backscattered light reflected back through the fiber, wherein this sensed time function is correlated directly with discrete longitudinal positions along the length of the fiber and the structure. When one or more of the microbend transducers is activated to induce a microbend in the fiber response to localized forces acting upon the structure, a portion of the backscattered light is lost at the microbend. This attenuation in backscattered light intensity is sensed quantitatively and positionally identified by the photodetector. Specific preferred constructions for microbend transducers and system arrangements particularly adapted for detecting structurally strain in an oil or gas pipeline are disclosed.

Abstract: A device (70) for switching optical signal paths of the type utilizing a plurality of light-transmitting optical fibers (40, 50) comprises a flexible elongated sleeve (20) having a longitudinally continuous interior cross section (24) with a plurality of comers (30) forming fiber-aligning grooves. The sleeve loosely receives a first fiber (40) from a first sleeve end (26) and a plurality of second fibers (50) from a second sleeve end (28). Each second fiber has its coupling end biased against an assigned corner. Also, the ends of all the second fibers are contained in one transverse plane (23).The coupling end (46) of the first fiber is positioned adjacent to the transverse plane and a portion (42) of the first fiber, remote from its end, is fixedly secured to the sleeve. Coupling of the first fiber with any of the second fibers is achieved by flexing the sleeve to move the first fiber end against the corner containing the selected second fiber.

Abstract: An optical fibre (14) is optically coupled to an optically active element (13), for example a light source. In order to achieve optimum coupling, the end portion of the fibre (14) is carefully adjusted in relation to said element (13) in three dimensions. The end of the fibre is provided with a sleeve (15) slidably mounted in a bushing (17). The bushing is provided with a flange (18) which is adjustably pressed against a surface (12) on a mounting base (11) which is perpendicular to the axis of the sleeve (15). The mounting base (11) also carries the optically active element (13) near the end of the fibre (14). After the sleeve (15) and the bushing (17) respectively are adjusted so that maximum coupling is obtained between the fibre and the optical element the sleeve (15), bushing (17) and mounting base (11) are fixed together by introducing a highly fluid, quick-setting glue, preferably a cyanoacrylate, between the sleeve (15) and the bushing (17) and between the bushing (17) and the mounting base (11).
