    Abstract: 4644. Gemmell, D., and Stewart, W. Feb. 23. Hatchways.-The tarpaulins covering a ship's hatchway are secured by a batten consisting of two bars 1. 3, one of which is adapted to slide over the other and is fitted with wedge surfaces 4 which engage cleats 5 on the coaming. The two bars 1, 3 are kept together by studs 7, which may be fitted with clamping-nuts 10. By sliding the bar 3, the wedges force the bar 1 towards the coaming, securing the tarpaulin.

Charging.-Fuel is supplied to a gas-producer through hoppers, each of which consists of a cylinder 33 fitted to slide in bearings and so arranged that when it is raised the fuel enters through openings 34. The hopper is adapted to be engaged by a lever connected with the outlet gas-valve, so that it is impossible to open a hopper to the fuel chamber when the gas outlet from such chamber is open.

    Abstract: 17,924. Stewart, W. R., Stewart, T. S., and Braverman, A. S. Aug. 3. Non-metallic elastic bodies and cores; metallic spring bodies and cores.-A thin metallic casing 7, Fig. 3, sliding on the sides of the rim is supported by circumferentially - arranged hollow india-rubber cylinders 17, Fig. 1, secured to the casing and rim. The casing is in two parts, bulged at the sides, and formed with lateral extensions 14, 15 carrying an elastic tread. The inner edges 11, are grooved to contain packing 12, which bears against plates 10.covering the joint between the felloe 3 and a channel-rim 4. Each cylinder 17, Fig. 4, has three annular grooves containing metal collars. The centre collar 22 is held by a radial diametrical pin 25 screwed into the rim; the end collars are connected to the outer part of the casing by outwardly-bent extensions 23, and to the sides of the casing by diametrical screws 9.
