    Abstract: PURPOSE: A power train for a 5-stage automatic transmission in a vehicle is provided to minimize power loss by restricting operating factors from rotating faster than output factors in overdriving, and perform 5-forward and reverse speed ratio with four simple planetary gear sets and four frictional factors. CONSTITUTION: A power train of a 5-stage automatic transmission is composed of a first planetary gear set(4) having four operating factors by combining two simple planetary gear sets, and using the first operating factor as the input factor; a second planetary gear set(6) having four operating factors by combining two simple planetary gear sets, acting the first operating factor as the input factor, variably connecting first and second operating factors to the second operating factor of the first planetary gear set, and connecting the third operating factor to the fourth operating factor of the first planetary gear set; a clutch unit inserted between the second operating factor of the first planetary gear set and first and second operating factors of the second planetary gear set to control power transmission; and a brake unit acting the third operating factor of the first planetary gear set and the fourth operating factor of the second planetary gear set as reaction factors selectively. 5-forward and reverse speed ratio is performed with four simple planetary gear sets and four frictional factors.

The size and the weight are reduced by realizing forward 5-speed and reverse 1-speed.

In the power train, a first brake to variably fix the first carrier and a second brake to variably fix the second sun gear is prepared. A first clutch variably connects the first ring gear with the second carrier. A second clutch variably connects the input shaft with the first carrier. A third clutch variably connects the first sun gear with the second sun gear. Since the first double pinion planetary gear set is operated integrally, slip of a non-operation element is avoided.
