Abstract: Embodiments of the present invention provide various communication techniques for communication between a mobile computing device and an accessory. An accessory protocol that is generic to the mobile computing device can be used for some communication. An application executing at the mobile computing device can communicate with the accessory using an application communication protocol. In some embodiments, the application communication protocol can be different from the accessory communication protocol. In other embodiments the application protocol may only be recognized by the application and the accessory. In some embodiments, messages conforming to an application protocol can be communicated between the application and the accessory by packaging the messages inside a message conforming to the accessory communication protocol.

Abstract: Disclosed is a method by which a computing device 102 can authenticate an attached accessory 112 by using an authentication device 180 attached to another port. The accessory and the authentication device are coupled to the computing device by separate first 315 and second ports 310. The computing device receives a cross-transport authentication request from the authentication device. The computing device then authenticates the authentication device at the second port, and if successful, grants a set communication permissions, via the second port, to the authentication device. The set of permissions is then transferred to the first port and thus allows the accessory to communicate with the computing device. The computing device may be a mobile or portable device such as a smartphone. The authentication device may be a dongle and the accessory may be coupled wirelessly. The authentication step may include the accessory sending an identifier to the authentication device via the computing device.

Abstract: An accessory can obtain portable media device (PMD) database navigation history and initialize a database navigation interface to match the database navigation history. When the portable media player connects to an accessory 604 the accessory requests selection history 606 from the accessory for a media asset already queued for playback and displays the selection on the user interface of the accessory 610. The user can also navigate the database from the accessory 612. The accessory can be a home stereo system. In one example, an accessory can determine whether the database of the portable media device was updated while the portable media device was disconnected from the accessory. In a second example an accessory can create and manage a playlist for the portable media player and can incorporate into the playlist tracks already queued for playback when the accessory connects to the portable media device. Enhances a users ability to control operation of the portable media device using a remote user interface provided by the accessory.
