    Abstract: 1305599 Ortho-benzoyl benzoic acid and anthraquinone BADISCHE ANILIN- & SODAFABRIK AG 3 July 1970 [4 July 1969] 32347/70 Heading C2C Ortho-benzoylbenzoic acid is obtained by oxidizing an indem of the formula where R1 and R 3 each represent a hydrogen atom or an alkyl radical and R 2 represents an alkyl radical, with oxygen in the liquid phase in the presence of a heavy metal salt, e.g. cobalt or manganese salts, and a compound yielding bromide ions. The ratio of bromide to each mole of heavy metal salt is preferably 0À2-2 grams. The ortho-benzoyl benzoic acid may be converted, without isolation, to anthraquinone by means of a dehydrating agent such as sulphuric acid or phosphoric acid.

Indazoles of the formulµ in which B represents the radical of a phenol attached in the para-position relative to the OH-group, or of an N-substituted aniline or diphenylamine, either of which is attached in the para-position relative to the amino group, or a 3-indolyl radical, the ring moiety of B being optionally substituted by halogen, alkyl, alkoxy, phenyl or alkanoylamino and ring A being optionally substituted by halogen, alkyl, alkoxy, alkylsulphonyl or carbalkoxy, are prepared by reacting a compound of the formula with a dithionate in a liquid medium in the alkaline pH range at 10-120‹ C. The reaction is preferably effected using sodium dithionate in the presence of NaOH. Specified liquid media include water, alcohols, glycol ethers, acetone, amides or mixtures thereof. Examples relate to the preparation of 2-p-hydroxy-, 2-p-dimethylaminophenyl-, 2-(2 1 -methylindolyl)- and 2 - (p - N - ethyl - N - # - cyanoethylaminophenyl) - 3 - aminoindazole, 2 - (p - hydroxyphenyl) - 3 - amino - 5 - chloroindazole and 2- (p - hydroxyphenyl) - 3 - amino - 6 - methoxyindazole.

Specified solvents or diluents include phthalic acid esters and polymeric ethylene oxides. Examples are given of the manufacture of o - aminobenzonitrile, 5 - methyl - 2 - aminobenzonitrile and 2 - amino - 5 - chlorobenzonitrile. Some other isatin-b -oximes which may be treated are listed.
