Abstract: 1,3-Dienes having four to ten carbon atoms are polymerized in aqueous emulsion using 0.001 to 3% of a catalyst comprising (a) complex compounds of cobalt in which the cobalt is at least trivalent and which bears ligands containing nitrogen atoms selected from ammonia, hydrazine, derivatives of ammonia carrying cycloaliphatic hydrocarbon radicals, derivatives of hydrazine carrying aliphatic hydrocarbon radicals, and derivatives of hydrazine carrying cycloaliphatic hydrocarbon radicals all these hydrocarbon radicals containing one to ten carbon atoms together with (b) halogenated hydrocarbons, indifferent to water, containing one to ten halogen atoms and having molecular weights of from 35 to 128, the molar ratio of halogenated hydrocarbon to cobalt complex compound being between 0.5 to 1 and 40 to 1. Specified dienes are butadiene, isoprene, 2-3-dimethylbutadiene and 2-phenylbutadiene while specified comonomers are the methyl up to 2-ethyl hexyl esters of acrylic, methacrylic, fumaric or maleic acids, especially butyl acrylate, acrylo and methacrylonitrile, styrene, alphastyrene, o-, m- and p-methyl styrene, p-ethyl-styrene and vinyl-methyl, ethyl, isopropyl, n-butyl or isobutyl ethers. Amongst the listed cobalt compounds are octarine-mu-aminoperoxocobalt (III)-cobalt (IV) chloride, tetraethylenediamine - mu -aminoperoxocobalt (II)-cobalt (V) nitrate, hexamminetriodicobalt (II) oxalate, sulphatooctammine - mu - iminodi-cobalt (III) nitrate, nitratoaquotetrahydrazine-mu-aminodicobalt (III) chloride, the cobalt complex compounds en being an alkylene diamine, and Specified halogenated hydrocarbons include n-amyl chloride, carbon tetrachloride, chloroform, and chlorobenzene. Stabilizers e.g. trinonylphenyl phosphite, chain transfer agents, and emulsifying agents may be present, and the polymerization take place by batch or continuous methods with continuous addition of reactants.

Abstract: Polymers suitable for use as electrical semi-conductors are obtained by heating a compound having an aromatic nucleus which is either a hydrocarbon or a hydrocarbon having a hetero atom in the aromatic nucleus, with a substance, or mixture of substances, which acts both as a Friedel-Crafts catalyst and as a dehydrogenating agent, at 100 DEG to 800 DEG C. in the presence of an inert gas and in the absence of oxygen. The polymer may have a conductivity of 10-10 to 10-0.5 mho. The compound having an aromatic nucleus may be benzene, toluene, xylene, diphenyl, pyrene, perylene, naphthalene, anthracene, phenanthrene, thiophene, pyrrole, indole or carbazole. Either a substance acting as a Friedel-Crafts catalyst mixed with a substance acting as a dehydrogenating agent, or a substance acting both as a Friedel-Crafts catalyst and as a dehydrogenating agent, may be used. In examples, polymers are prepared in the presence of aluminium trichloride mixed with copper dichloride, aluminium tribromide mixed with copper dichloride, aluminium trichloride mixed with iron trichloride, titanium tetrachloride mixed with iron trichloride, and aluminium trichloride mixed with tetrachloroquinone. The conductivity of the polymers may be increased by heating them at 100 DEG to 1000 DEG C. in an inert atmosphere.

Abstract: Waxy ethylene polymers dispersable in water are produced by polymerizing ethylene at 50 DEG -250 DEG C. and 100-2,000 atmospheres in p 20-80% of an organic solvent containing up to 20% of water in the presence of 0,1-20% of an at least 50% or wholly neutralized unsaturated polymerizable carboxylic or sulphonic acid and free radical forming calalysts. The acids may be acrylic, methacrylic, crotonic, maleic, fumaric or vinylsulphonic. An alkali, e.g. Na or K, hydroxide or ammonium hydroxide may be used for neutralization as well as organic ammonium compounds in which the H of the NH4 may be substituted by alkyl, alkoxy, aryl or aralkyl radicals. Amides or anhydrides of the above acids may be used together with the acids and their salts. The catalysts, e.g. 0,001-5%, may be organic or inorganic peroxides, e.g. benzoyl, a per salt, peroxyesters, azo compounds or redox systems or the radicals may be produced by high-energy radiation. Regulators, e.g. allyl acetate, may be used. The solvent may be alcohols, ketones, esters, ethers, lactones, and/or hydrocarbons. Dispersants may be used during polymerization which may be carried out in autoclaves or continuously in flow tubes.
