Abstract: Process for the preparation of alkenols of the formula I R -CH=CH(CH2)nOH I in which R denotes hydrogen or a hydrocarbon radical and index n denotes an integer from 3 to 15, a) by reacting a phosphonium salt of the formula IIa R -CH2-P IIa in which X represents chlorine, bromine and iodine, with an aldehyde of the formula IIIa or its semiacetal of the formula IIIb or b) by reacting a phosphonium salt of the formula IIb (C6H5)3P IIb with an aldehyde of the formula IV R CHO IV in a solvent in the presence of a base, characterised in that the base used is the alkali metal salt of an alcohol and the solvent used is an alcohol.
