    Abstract: Moulding compositions based on polyarylene ethers A containing anhydride terminal groups and recurring units I in which t and q are each an integer 0, 1, 2 or 3, T, Q and Z are each a chemical bond or a group selected from -O-, -S-, -SO2-, S=O, C=O, -N=N-, -R C=CR - and -CR R -, with the proviso that at least one of the groups T, Q and Z is -SO2- or C = O, R and R are each a hydrogen atom or a C1- to C10-alkyl group, R and R are each a hydrogen atom, a C1- to C10-alkyl group, a C1- to C10-alkoxy group or a C6- to C18-aryl group, where the above groups may each be substituted by fluorine and/or chlorine atoms, Ar and Ar are C6- to C18-aryl groups, it being possible for these to have substituents selected from C1- to C10-alkyl, C6- to C18-aryl, C1- to C10-alkoxy and halogen, or their random copolymers or block copolymers.

    Abstract: Moulding materials (I) are claimed, contg. (A) 50-95 wt.% polyarylene ether, (B) 5-50 wt.% block copolycondensate of (B1) polyarylene ether blocks and (B2) thermotropic polyester blocks, and (C) 0-40 wt.% additives etc.. Pref. (I) contains 70-95 wt.% (A), 5-30 wt.% (B) comprising 2-50 wt.% (B1) blocks and 50-98 wt.% (B2) blocks, and 0-40 wt.% (C). (A) is a polymer with repeating units of formula (II), or a statistical copolymer or block copolymer thereof; t, q = 0, 1, 2 or 3; T, Q = SO2, O, S, CO, N=N, SO, -RaC=CRb-, direct bond or CRcRd (with Ra, Rb = H or 1-6C alkyl and Rc, Rd = H, 1-6C alk(ox)yl or aryl opt. substd. with F and/or Cl); Z = SO2, CO, -RaC=CRb-, SO or N=N; Ar, Ar1 = 6-14C aryl, opt. substd. 1-8C alkyl, 6-20C aryl, 1-8C alkoxy or halo. USE/ADVANTAGE - Used for the prodn. of fibres, film and moulded prods. (claimed). Also claimed are fibres, film and moulded prods. obtd. from (I). Compared with prior-art mixts. of polyacrylene ethers and thermotropic polyesters, (I) have a better balance of good flow properties and mechanical properties, esp. high heat distortion pt. and good rigidity; (I) are therefore suitable for the prodn. of fine-structured mouldings, esp. for electrical and electronic components.

    Abstract: Thermoplastic moulding materials (TMM) are claimed, contg. (A) 65-90 wt.% copolyarylene ether with at least 2 different repeat units and (B) 10-35 wt.% polycarbonate. (A) is obtd. by polycondensation of dihydroxy cpds. of formula (I) with dihalo cpds. of formula (II). In the formulae, X is direct bond, SO, S, O, CO, CR3R4, SO2, -CR5=CR6- or -N=N-; R1 and R2 are 1-6C alkyl or alkoxy; R3 and R4 are H, 1-6C alkyl, 1-4C halo-substd. alkyl or aryl; R5 and R6 are H or 1-6C alkyl; m = 0 or 1; n and p = 0,1,2,3 or 4; Y = Cl or F; Z1 and Z2 are O, S, SO2, SO, CO, -N=N- or direct bond; R7-R10 are H, Cl or F, or as for R1 and R2; q and v = 0 or 1; r,s,t and u = 0-4. Pref. (A) is a copolyarylene ether-sulphone with 3-97 mol.% units of formula -(Phe-SO2-Phe-O)- (Al) and 3-97 mol.% units of formula -(Phe-CMe2-Phe-O-Phe-SO2-Phe-O)- (A2) (where Phe = 1,4-phenylene). Polycarbonate (B) constitutes the disperse phase. USE/ADVANTAGE - Used for the prodn. of fibres, film and moulded prods. (claimed). Also claimed are moulded prods. obtd. from TMM. The invention provides polyarylene ether/polycarbonate-based moulding materials with good impact resistance.
