Abstract: PURPOSE:To provide a liquid crystal element having high contrast, fast response rate, high precision, and high luminance in which the liquid crystal has a bookshelf structure or a structure with a small gradient of layers nearly to the bookshelf structure and especially shows excellent orientation state. CONSTITUTION:A liquid crystal compsn. 15 containing a liquid crystal comprising a single component or several components without having cholesteric phase is held between substrates 11a and 11b facing each other. In this element, the surface energy gamma1 of a polyimide film or aromatic polyamide film 13a formed in the substrate 11a side and the surface energy gamma2 of the film in the substrate 11b side are in the relation of gamma1>gamma2. Further, only the polyimide or aromatic polyamide film 13a is subjected to uniaxial orientation treatment.

Abstract: PURPOSE:To improve the durability of a device by preventing the transfer of a liquid crystal and lessening the increase in the cell thickness at the ends of a cell. Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To manufacture a liquid crystal element of high quality with good manufacture efficiency by specifying the physical direction of an upper and a lower substrate and the shape of an injection hole in consideration of a difference in surface energy between the substrates. SOLUTION: The pattern of the sealing material 3 of a liquid crystal cell 5 is provided with a 1st opening part 4 for injecting liquid crystal 8 and a 2nd opening part 9 for allowing excessive liquid crystal 8 to flow out of the cell 5. The liquid crystal cell 5 is so formed that the difference between the large surface energy of the substrate 1 and the surface energy of the liquid crystal 8 is >=20 dyne/cm and the striped electrodes of the substrate 1 cross the 1st opening part 4, so the preferential direction of liquid crystal injection is as shown by an arrow 12. Liquid crystal 8 which enters the cell as shown by an arrow 11 is therefore injected into the cell speedily in the preferential direction 12. The 1st opening part 4 is formed to 95 to 100% of the length of the side where the opening part 4 is provided, so the liquid crystal 8 reaches both the sides of the cell sufficiently and no defect in liquid crystal injection is caused.

Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for manufacturing a liquid crystal element which prevents degradation of liquid crystal materials from alteration, etc., uniformizes cell gaps in a plane and is capable of injecting a liquid crystal in a short time. The liquid crystal is charged in the cell 1 while pouring the heated liquid crystal in the cell 1 from the first opening 12 in a prescribed time and discharing the liquid crystal which has passed through the cell 1 from the second opening 13. Thus, even when smetic liquid crystal having high vapor pressure and high viscosity is used, alteration thereof from vaporation can be prevented and gap defective caused by pressure difference between inside and outside of the cell can be prevented.
