    Abstract: PURPOSE:To restrain the leak quantity of NH3 by specifying respectively the numerical aperture of a catalyst and a relationship between catalyst capability and engine displacement in the case of reduction and removal of NOx via the addition of NH3 to an exhaust gas and the contact of the exhaust gas with a catalyst of TiO2 system. CONSTITUTION:NOx is reduced and removed by the addition of NH3 to an exhaust gas from a diesel engine and the contact of the exhaust gas with a catalyst of TiO2 system. In this case, the numerical aperture of said catalyst is set at 50%-90%. Also, a relationship between catalyst capability and engine displacement is so set as 1.0

And 0.3-0.9mol of NH3 is mixed, to the detected 1mol of NOX, and TiO2 catalyst is brought in contact with it at the temperature of 250-500 deg.C. By this, efficient deoxidation of NOX can be attempted.

CONSTITUTION:A fuel reforming unit 20 produces hydrogen by reforming fuel using the fuel supplied from a fuel tank 18 through an electromagnetic valve 27 and air supplied from a blower 25. The hydrogen is stored by means of metallic hydride 21 and the metallic hydride 21 is heated by a heating unit 22 at start and hydrogen gas produced is supplied to a Diesel engine 10 through a manifold 24. The electromagnetic valve 27 and the blower 25 is controlled by a computer 28 to which a value sensed by a temperature sensor 29 sensing a temperature of the reforming unit 20 is applied so that a given amount of fuel can be reformed.

The controller 5 corrects the control signal so that the ignition timing signal accords with the control signal (injection timing) calculated from crank angle, load signal, and the temperature signal and outputs an instruction into an injection timing control mechanism 4. Therefore, the fuel injection timing is controlled to an optimum value under any condition independently of the error in setting an injection pump 2, fuel properties (cetane value), deterioration of a fuel injection valve 8, etc., and the blowing-up characteristic on start and the white smoke can be improved.
