Abstract: A diesel engine comprises a turbocharger, an intercooler 4, a particulate filtering unit 10 and an EGR cooler 12. EGR ratio of intake air, injection timing of an injection nozzle and excess air ratio lambda to fuel are controlled depending upon engine-operating load. Lean premixed compression ignition is performed at low engine load; low temperature combustion at low excess air ratio with high EGR ratio is performed at medium engine load; and normal EGR combustion is performed at high engine load.

Abstract: A diesel engine comprising a fuel injection device and a controller for controlling the fuel injection device in accordance with an operating condition of the engine. The fuel injection device effects a preliminary injection for injecting fuel into a cylinder during a period from the initial part of an intake stroke to the middle part of a compression stroke and a main injection for injecting fuel into a combustion chamber in the vicinity of a top dead center of the compression stroke, whereby lean mixture is formed and a maximum combustion temperature in the combustion chamber is decreased to suppress generation of NOx and to reduce emission of black smoke.

Abstract: An exhaust gas purification apparatus wherein a selective reduction type catalyst (10) is provided on the way of an exhaust pipe (9) and a urea water (17) (a reducing agent) is added upstream from said selective reduction type catalyst (10) by the use of a urea water addition means (18) (reducing agent addition means), to reduce and purify NOx, which comprises NOx sensors (24 and 25) being provided in the entrance side and the exit side of the selective reduction type catalyst (10), respectively, for detecting NOx concentrations, and an NOx purification control device (23) (control device) which determines to be abnormal when a prescribed NOx reduction rate is not achieved, based on the detection signals (24a, 25a) from both NOx sensors (24 and 25), and instructs the limitation of the amount of the spray of a fuel under the condition having been determined to be abnormal. The above apparatus can be suitably used for minimizing the increase in the amount of the discharge of NOx under conditions wherein an NOx purification system is abnormal.

Abstract: An exhaust gas purification device constructed to reduce and purify NOx by having a NOx storage and reduction catalyst (5) installed in the middle of an exhaust gas flow path (2, 4). A fuel reforming catalyst structure (7) or a plasma fuel reforming means (8) for resolving fuel into H2 and CO is installed on the upstream side of the NOx storage and reduction catalyst (5) in the exhaust gas flow path (2, 4). The fuel is dissolved into H2 and CO, NOx on the surface of the NOx storage and reduction catalyst is efficiently reduced into N2 by the H2 and CO. A high NOx reduction rate is always achieved despite varying operating conditions.
