The compound I may be converted into an acid addition salt by reaction with an acid. Cinnamyl p-nitrophenyl carbonate is prepared by reacting cinnamyl alcohol with chlorocarbonic acid p-nitrophenyl ester. Pharmaceutical compositions having a local anaesthetic action comprise the compound I, or a non-toxic acid addition salt thereof, in conjunction with an inert carrier.
