Abstract: 12,748. Kitsee, I. June 1. Telegraphs.-In a system of submarine duplex or quadruplex telegraphy, one message is sent by intermittent or alternating currents, preferably produced by means of a variable resistance, and is received by a telephone, the other message being sent by positive and negative currents and received by a siphon recorder or like instrument. The Figure shows a system of quadruplex telegraphy, the telephone receiver F and siphon recorder F being arranged between the cable and artificial line as usual. The positive and negative currents are sent to line by a double key in the usual way, or preferably by the arrangement shown, in which two batteries B, B' are arranged in opposition, the larger one being shunted by the key A. Condensers C, C' are arranged so that when the key A is depressed, the battery B sends an impulse to line, while when the key is raised, the battery B sends an impulse of reverse polarity. A dot or dash is signalled according as the key is depressed for a short or long interval. The other key A controls the circuit of a magnet E arranged so as automatically to vibrate its armature E , which varies the resistance of the microphone M in circuit with the primary of an induction coil D, the secondary of which is in the cable circuit. Short and long depressions of the key A thus cause sounds of corresponding length in the telephone F at the receiving-station, but do not affect the receiver F.

Abstract: 11,745. Kitsee, I. June 5. Telegraphs.-In a siphon recorder, a shield provided with an opening, is interposed between the siphon and the paper so as to prevent the deposition of ink upon the paper except during a certain part of the movement of the siphon. The shield D, Fig. 1, has an opening d such that it is in alinement with the recording-end of the siphon B at the middle of the movement of the latter. A groove d serves to collect the ink deposited on the shield. Such an arrangement is used in connexion with a code in which impulses of opposite polarity follow one another, one impulse representing a "dot" and two impulses a "dash." Fig. 2 shows the word "greeting " as recorded by the apparatus shown in Fig. 1.

Abstract: 18,021. Kitsee, I. Aug. 19. Drawings to Specification. Conductors, insulating.-Conductors are insulated by folding thereon two strips of some vulcanizable insulating-material, such as caoutchouc or guttapercha, which is then pressed on by rollers while the cable is heated from inside, so as to secure uniform vulcanization. The cable is heated from the inside by passing a suitably-regulated current through the core, and, if it is desired to heat it from the outside also, it is placed in a suitable vulcanizing- chamber.
