Abstract: PURPOSE:To obtain an epoxy resin having excellent heat resistance and being free from lowering it its mechanical properties and electrical insulation property during its use at high temperatures, comprising a specified product of reaction of a compound having three phenolic hydroxyl groups in the molecule with a bisphenol epoxy resin. CONSTITUTION:This epoxy resin is a product of reaction of a compound (A) having three phenolic hydroxyl groups in the molecule of the formula (wherein R and R are each H, an aliphatic hydrocarbon group, a monocyclic or fused ring aryl group, an alicyclic hydrocarbon group, and R is H or an aliphatic hydrocarbon group) with a bisphenol epoxy resin (B). Said reaction is performed so that 0.03-0.5 phenolic hydroxyl group of said compound (A) may be reacted with one epoxy group of said resin (B). The reaction of said compound (A) with said resin (B) is performed by melting and agitating them at, usually, 100-250 deg.C for, usually, about 3-20hr.

Abstract: PURPOSE:To obtain a flame-retardant epoxy resin being useful for an electric insulation coating material, a varnish, a laminate, etc., and having excellent heat resistance and water (moisture) resistance by reacting a specified epoxy compd. with a specified one of halogenated bisphenols. CONSTITUTION:This flame-retardant epoxy resin is obtd. by reacting an epoxy compd. of formula I (wherein R1, R2 and R3 are each H, a 1-6C alkyl; R4 is a tert-butyl group; n is the number of repeating units and contains the case of 0) having an epoxy equivalent of 200-1,000) and one of halogenated bisphenols of formula II (wherein R5 and R6 are each H or a 1-6C alkyl; and R7-R10 are each a halogen). As compared with the conventional flame-retardant epoxy resin, it has more excellent heat resistance and water (moisture) resistance and the same level of excellent flame resistance and processability. It is therefore effectively used for an electric insulation coating material, a varnish, a laminate, etc., in a field of electric and electronic components.

The component A is a trifunctional epoxy resin prepd. by condensing a phenol deriv. of formula I (wherein R1-R3 are each H, or 6C or lower alkyl; R4-R11 are each H, 6C or lower alkyl, or a halogen atom.; and R1-R11 may be the same with each other) with epichlorohydrin, while the component B is a novolak phenolic resin. 100pts.wt. component A is blended with about 20-120pts.wt. component B.
