Abstract: A bidirectional voltage translator (102) includes a first port (200/400), a second port (202/402) and a bidirectional translator circuit (208-215/404-408, 410, 412-415) coupled between the first and second ports (200/400,202/402). The first and second ports (200/400,202/402) communicate signals at a first voltage level and a second voltage level, respectively. The second voltage level is different from the first voltage level. When a first port signal input at the first voltage level at the first port (200/400) is detected, the bidirectional translator circuit (208-215/404-408, 410, 412-415) translates the first port signal into the second voltage level at the second port (202/402) and disables translation of a signal at the second port (202/402) to the first port (200/400). When a second port signal input at the second voltage level at the second port (202/402) is detected, the bidirectional translator circuit (208-215/404-408, 410, 412-415) translates the second port signal into the first voltage level at the first port (200/400) and disables translation of a signal at the first port (200/400) to the second port (202/402).

Abstract: A bidirectional voltage translator 102 couples signals between ports 106,110 which have different voltage signal levels, for example 3 V and 5 V ports in a radiotelephone and an attached accessory. The data direction is controlled by a state machine (figures 4-6) based on a PLD or microprocessor. The translator 102 includes a first port 400, a second port 402 and a bidirectional translator circuit 404-408,410, 412-415 coupled between the first and second ports 400,402. The first and second ports 400,402 communicate signals at a first voltage level and a second voltage level, respectively. The second voltage level is different from the first voltage level. When a first port signal input at the first voltage level at the first port 400 is detected, the bidirectional translator circuit 404-408,410, 412-415 translates the first port signal into the second voltage level at the second port 402 and disables translation of a signal at the second port 402 to the first port 400. When a second port signal input at the second voltage level at the second port 402 is detected, the bidirectional translator circuit 404-408,410, 412-415 translates the second port signal into the first voltage level at the first port 400 and disables translation of a signal at the first port 400 to the second port 402.

Abstract: A device (100) includes detachable main and auxiliary batteries (101, 102) and a circuit (310) for discharging and charging the batteries (101, 102). Discharging is accomplished by an auxiliary switch (420) that connects the auxiliary battery (102) to power the device (100), a detector (422), and a main switch (424) that connects the main battery (101) to power the device (100), without interruption, when the auxiliary battery (102) drops below a predetermined voltage (508) as determined by a detector (422). Charging is performed by switches (440, 442, 446), an internal charger (444), and a controller (306). When both batteries (101, 102) are attached, the controller (306) uses the switches (440, 442, 446) to select and couple charging current generated by the internal charger (444) to the main battery (101). Once charged, the controller (306) switches to charge the auxiliary battery (102).

Abstract: A portable electronic device (100, fig 1) is provided with a main battery (101, fig 1) and an auxiliary battery (102, fig 1) either of which is capable of powering the device on its own. The batteries may be charged by connecting the device to an external power supply (430, fig 4) under the control of charging circuit (310, fig 3) which controls charging switch (442, fig 4) to selectively charge one battery at a time. The main battery has priority over the auxiliary battery during charging and the main battery will be completely charged before charging of the auxiliary battery is initiated. If only one battery is attached then the device will charge that battery and if a discharged main battery is reconnected whilst the auxiliary battery is being charged then the charger interrupts charging of the auxiliary battery to charge the main battery. Each battery contains a thermistor to measure the temperature of the cells and a memory (402, 410, fig 4) containing information relating to the charging characteristics of the battery which can be read by the control. The main and auxiliary batteries are of differing size.

Abstract: A bi-directional voltage translator (102) includes a first port (300/302), a second port (302/300), and a switch circuit (310). The first port (300/302) communicates a first signal at a first voltage or a second voltage (V1/V2). The second port (302/300) communicates a second signal at the first voltage or a third voltage (V2/V1). The second and third voltages (V1/V2) are different. The switch circuit (310) is coupled to the first port (300/302) and the second port (302/300). The switch circuit (310), responsive to the first signal at the first voltage and the second signal at the third voltage (V2/V1), communicates to the second port (302/300) the second signal at the first voltage. The switch circuit (310), responsive to the second signal at the first voltage and the first signal at the second voltage (V1/V2), communicates to the first port (300/302) the first signal at the first voltage.

Abstract: A battery 101 has a memory 402 storing data identifying the battery type (NiCd, NiMH, alkaline, or Li-ion) and brand and also storing a multi-character message. The type and brand data and the message must match predetermined data before the battery can be used or charged, whereby only batteries which are known to be reliable and safe can be used or charged. A portable apparatus, particularly a portable cellular radio telephone, is powered by removable main and auxiliary batteries 101, 102 having respective memories 402, 410 storing such data. The apparatus is powered down if it detects that a battery with non-matching data is attached, and charging of a battery by an internal charger circuit 444 (or by an external charger) is terminated if the battery does not have the matching data. When the apparatus is in an operating mode it is powered by an external supply 430, if present. If the supply 430 is absent, the apparatus is first powered by the auxiliary battery 102 and then by the main battery 101 when the auxiliary battery voltage has dropped to a predetermined level. The charging circuit 444 first charges the main battery from the external supply 430 for a predetermined time at a regulated current, as determined by data in the memory 402. The auxiliary battery 102 is then similarly charged, followed by maintenance charging of both batteries. A controller 306 detects the presence of either battery 101, 102 by a voltage drop across respective thermistors 406, 414 therein.

Abstract: A portable cellular radiotelephone (100), which is powered by main and auxiliary batteries (101, 102) in an operating state. The main and auxiliary batteries (101, 102) include respective memories (402, 410) for storing a 64- bit registration number and 1024 bits of data for identifying the type and brand of such batteries. Memories (402, 410) store a laser-engraved 64-bit registration number and 1024 bits of data. In order to uniquely identify the batteries (101, 102), the 64-bit registration number includes a twelve-bit brand code having a predetermined brand code value and an eight-bit type code having a predetermined type code value, and the 1024 bits of data include a unique multi-character message. By identifying the unique brand code, type code and multi-character message when a battery is inserted into portable device (100), it can be insured that the portable device (100) will be operated with a reliable and safe battery. Otherwise, the portable device is turned off and the battery is not charged.
