The invention relates to a portable beverage preparation device for preparing a beverage from an ingredients containing capsule, the device comprising: a beverage brewing unit for receiving the capsule and preparing the beverage from the ingredients within the capsule by means of injection of liquid into the capsule, a liquid reservoir designed for holding a predefined liquid volume suitable for preparing the beverage, a pump unit adapted for providing pressurized liquid to the beverage brewing unit, and heating means arranged within the liquid reservoir and adapted for heating the liquid volume, wherein the device further comprises a multifunctional connector adapted for selectively connecting the device electrically and mechanically to a remote power source.

Method for identifying capsules in a beverage producing device comprising: providing a capsule comprising at least one identifier attached thereto or embedded therein; the identifier comprising a magnetically-responsive material, providing detecting means in the beverage producing device to detect the identifier including at least one emitting coil and at least one receiving coil, positioning the identifier in the magnetic field thereby altering the magnetic signal resulting therefrom, emitting a magnetic signal from the at least one emitting coil, detecting an altered signal by the receiving coil and identifying the capsule according to the alteration provided to the magnetic signal.

A machine for preparing liquid food or beverage from a beverage or food ingredient contained in a capsule or pod, comprises: a liquid food or beverage preparation unit (2) arranged to receive capsules or pods for use and evacuate capsules or pods upon use; a housing (9) having an opening (5') leading into a seat (5) to which capsules or pods are evacuated from the preparation unit; and a receptacle (30) having a cavity (30') forming a storage space for collecting capsules or pods evacuated to the seat into the receptacle to a level of fill. The receptacle is insertable into the seat for collecting capsules or pods and is removable from the seat for emptying the collected capsules or pods. The prepration machine further comprises means to inhibit jamming of the receptacle at removal from the seat when the level of fill in the receptacle extends above the opening of the housing.

The invention proposes a modular method of manufacturing a set of beverage production machines with different beverage-related functions. The method comprises the steps of: - providing a plurality of identical core units (2), the core units (2) being provided with control circuitry and a beverage production module designed for housing an ingredient package and feeding a liquid to the interior of the ingredient package, - providing a plurality of different base platforms (1,3,4), the base platforms differing as to beverage production functions, and - manufacturing a set of different beverage production machines by mounting respectively at least one of the core units (2) on the top surface of one out of the plurality of differing base platforms (1,3,4) and by mounting water reservoirs (7) on the base platforms (1,3,4).
