In a field timebase for television apparatus, the flyback time is reduced by connecting the charging capacitor between the grid of the output valve and the deflection coils. Fig. 2 shows a field deflection circuit in which deflection coils (not shown) are coupled via transformer 70 to the triode 54. A sawtooth waveform is generated by charging capacitor 75 via an amplitude control 44 and discharging it via valve 36. Valves 36, 54 are made self-oscillatory by feedback via a line-frequency eliminating integrator 90a, 90b. The waveform is linearized and flyback time reduced by feedback from the secondary winding 72. Frequency and linearity controls 96, 62 are included. The circuit is synchronized by positive pulses at 104. In Fig. 1 (not shown), negative synchronizing pulses are fed to the anode of valve 36 and a composite R.C. combination is employed at 90a, 90b.

    Abstract: An improved transmission arrangement for a color television signal includes a time-division multiplexing apparatus for alternately presenting for transmission through a single channel baseband signals defining the chrominance information of the television signal. In order to provide improved resolution, a store is coupled to the signal source for storing at a writing rate a first of the baseband components during the time at which it is generated. A read generator is coupled to the store for reading the stored baseband component at a higher data rate than that at which it was generated. The baseband component is transmitted through the single channel at the higher data rate.

    Abstract: A television arrangement generates signals from independent pairs of adjacent lines. The signals are separately summed and differenced to produce S and DELTA signals. The S signal is representative of the luminance of a scan between the original scans, and the DELTA represents vertical resolution. The signals are transmitted to a monitor for generating a high-vertical-resolution picture. Where the display is a color TV receiver, the DELTA signal may be buried within the chroma channel by frequency interleaving with the DELTA signal occuring only in locations representing high-frequency vertical information. The buried DELTA signal is invisible on a conventional receiver. Other independent data may be coupled through the chroma channel by frequency interleaving.

    Abstract: In a standard NTSC composite video signal, the peak excursion of the luminance plus chrominance signal for certain saturated colors exceeds the peak excursion of the white-representative luminance alone. When digitized, the signal is subject to quantizing noise. The effective spectial distribution of the quantizing noise is improved by reducing the amplitude of the chrominance signal so that the peak excursion of luminance plus chrominance for saturated colors does not substantially exceed the peak amplitude of white-representative luminance.

    Abstract: A compressor compresses the edges of a wide screen image to provide a compressed wide screen video signal which may be displayed on a conventional 4:3 aspect ratio receiver with the compressed edge portions largely hidden from view because of receiver overscan. Complementary edge expansion restores the compressed signal to its original form for display by a wide screen receiver. The relative proportions of compression applied to the left and right edges of the wide screen images are varied to reduce the appearance of edge distortion in the compressed signal when displayed on a standard aspect ratio receiver and to reduce the appearance of loss of edge resolution in the expanded signal when displayed on a wide screen receiver.
