Abstract:
A system and method are provided for selecting groups of one or more cable television subscribers (150) remotely from a billing computer (110) using data fields in either the billing computer database (110) or a system control computer database (120). A selection criteria language may be used for selecting subscribers based on data fields in the system control database (120). Once a group of cable subscribers has been selected, an on-screen message may be remotely created and transmitted to the selected subscriber using cable transmission apparatus. The method provides a way of correlating subscriber information in a comprehensive subscriber database (such as may exist on a billing computer) with other subscriber information in a more limited database stored on a system control computer (120) to allow on-screen messages to be targeted at subscribers selected on the basis of criteria from either database. It also allows message attributes (such as duration of display, colors, and message alerts) to be specified remotely from a billing computer (110) rather than requiring the presence of a human operator at the system control computer (120).
Abstract:
A method for positioning an electrical component (90) for pick-up by a pick-and-place device (10) which includes removing the electrical component directly from a storage tube (180) through a window (187) formed in the storage tube. The electrical components slide in the storage tube to a desired removal position which is adjacent the window, and are removed through the window using a pick-up tool (30). A modified storage tube (180) formed with the window is also disclosed, along with a connecting hole (155) with which the storage tube is connected to a fixture (150). The fixture includes a pin (154) which fits into the connecting hole (188).
Abstract:
In a data transmission system comprising a plurality N of transmission sites (22, 24, 28) and at least one reception site (30) a set of data at each transmission site is uniquely encrypted by (a) providing each transmission site (22, 24, 28) with a broadcast key (42, 44, 48) unique to that transmission site and a system key (sk) that is the same for all transmission sites, the system key (sk) comprising a plurality S of bits and each of the broadcast keys comprising a unique plurality B of bits, wherein B is less than S; (b) convolving in a predetermined manner at each transmission site (22, 24, 28) the system key and the broadcast key unique (42, 44, 48) to that transmission site to generate a unique data encryption key for that transmission site; (c) encrypting the set of data at each transmission site (22, 24, 28) with the unique data encryption key (42, 44, 48) generated at that site.
Abstract:
An off-premises method and apparatus for the interdiction of unauthorized channels of a broadband cable television signal includes common circuitry (100) for adjusting the amplitude and equalization levels of the broadband CATV signals and one or more subscriber modules (130) for generating jamming signals of different frequencies which are used to interdict one or more unauthorized channels. Each subscriber module is associated with a subscriber (160) and is programmable and addressable to adjust the jamming parameters of that subscriber independently of other subscribers. The subscriber module is based on a sequential state machine which loads frequency control words corresponding to the jammed channels from a frequency control memory into each latch on a cyclic basis.
Abstract:
A digital audio communication system includes a digital modulation and demodulation scheme which efficiently uses the bandwidth and channel spacing of a cable television system. A 30 channel digital bit stream is demultiplexed into six groups of five channels. Each group of channels thereafter modulates a carrier by a quadrature partial response (QPR) process. The QPR signal, is then transmitted over the cable system to a multiplicity of subscribers, each of which has a QPR demodulator (125). The demodulators are of the decision feedback type having a modified Costas loop carrier recovery circuit (135). The grouping of an odd number (five) of digital audio channels per QPR modulator (75) minimizes error propagation due to the correlative QPR demolulation process. The decision feedback decoding is implemented in simple current nodes where a bilevel output from the decoded data is subtracted from a tertiary level output of a mixer.
Abstract:
A digital audio communication system (8) includes a digital modulation and demodulation scheme which efficiently uses the bandwidth and channel spacing of a cable television system. A 30 channel digital bit stream is demultiplexed into six groups of five channels. Each group of channels thereafter modulates a carrier by a quadrature partial response (QPR) process. The QPR signal, an amplitude modulated, double sideband, carrier suppressed (AMDSBSC) signal, is then transmitted over the cable system to a multiplicity of subscribers, each of which has a QPR demodulator (100). The demodulators (100) are of the decision feedback type having a modified Costas loop carrier recovery circuit. The modified Costas loop provides an error voltage based upon the difference of the received data states versus the nominal data states and the quadrant the data occupies.
Abstract:
A subscriber terminal includes a receiver for receiving a television signal including video, audio and data information. A channel of the television signal may be selected for display on the television. A memory stores channel identification information such as channel identifiers. The channel identifiers include at least one display character. A processor establishes a relationship between channel identification information and channel numbers associated with channels of the television signal. An on-screendisplay control circuit controls the display of character information on the television and has the capability of overlaying the channel number and the channel identification information on the video portion of a selected channel displayed on the television for a predetermined period of time. Program identification information such as program titles may also be displayed. Alternatively or additionally, the channel identification information may be displayed on a display such as an LED display of a subscriber terminal.
Abstract:
A remote control system including a hand held remote control unit (200) with an alphanumeric information display (209), for controlling and communicating with a first controlled device (100), such as a digital music tuner connected to a community antenna television (CATV) cable, and for controlling a selected one of a plurality of second controlled devices (300), such as CATV set-top-units, VCRs, or televison sets. A first, high speed, error free display information communications protocol is utilized for transmitting program content or other information from the first controlled device (100) to the remote control unit (200) for display. A second or control communications protocol is utilized by the remote control unit (200) for controlling the first controlled device (100) and a selected one of the second controlled devices (300). The first controlled device (100) utilizes a first clock signal embedded in digital music signals provided via the cable to derive clocking signals for implementing the display information communications protocol, resulting in an efficient, low cost electronic design.
Abstract:
A vector quantization method employs mirrored input vectors to increase the reproduction quality of transmitted vector quantized data. A codevector (131) is selected from a vector quantization codebook for each possible orientation of an input vector. The codevector having the smallest distortion (142) relative to the input vector is selected for transmission (148). An identification code identifying the selected orientation is also transmitted (148).
Abstract:
A variable rate vector quantization apparatus (22) and method employs a tree structured codebook. Code vectors are selected from different levels of the codebook according to the value of a threshold. The value of the treshold is periodically adjusted according to the fullness of a buffer that stores vector quantized data to be transmitted. According to the invention, vector quantized data for redundant, or similar vectors is not transmitted. Rather, a "copy last vector" instruction is transmitted for these vectors to achieve further data compression. A method of mean removal from vectors to be vector quantized is also disclosed.
