Abstract: A method and apparatus for high efficiency encoding audio signals. The high-efficiency encoding apparatus includes a transform circuit (11; 61) for transforming an input signal into frequency components and a signal component separating circuit (62) for separating the frequency components into tonal components and noisy components. The high-efficiency encoding apparatus also includes a tonal component encoding circuit (63) for encoding tonal components and a noisy component encoding circuit (64) for encoding noisy components. The tonal components are made up only of signal components of a specified band and encoded along with the information specifying the band. The noisy components are normalized (31) and quantized (33) every pre-set encoding unit and encoded along with the quantization precision information. The information on the numbers of quantization steps of the noisy components is encoded with a smaller number of bits for the high- range side than for the low-range side. With the high-efficiency encoding method and apparatus, not only the main information but also the subsidiary information may be improved in encoding efficiency, while the degree of freedom may be assured in the method of representing the subsidiary information and satisfactory encoding may be achieved.

Abstract: According to the present invention, for encoding input signals, the input signals are transformed into frequency components, and the frequency components are separated into a first signal composed of tonal components and a second signal composed of other components. The first and second signals are encoded respectively, and code strings for transmission or recording are generated on the basis of encoded signals resulting from first and second encoding. For example, only the first signal is encoded and the code string is caused to include partial information strings grouped so as to have common values on the basis of at least one of reference parameters pertaining to the signal separation and parameters pertaining to the first encoding. Thus, more efficient encoding than in the conventional technique can be realized.

Abstract: A data compression apparatus for compressing a digital input signal to provide a compressed digital output signal. In the apparatus, a circuit derives plural spectral coefficients from the digital input signal, and groups the spectral coefficients into bands. An adaptive bit allocation circuit adaptively allocates a number of spectrum-dependent quantizing bits among the bands to allocate to each band a number of spectrum-dependent quantizing bits for quantizing each of the spectral coefficients in the band. The number of spectrum-dependent quantizing bits allocated to each band by the adaptive bi t allocation circuit is determined according to the band magnitude, weighted depending on the band frequency.

In the bit allocation calculation circuit (406), reference is had to a table for bit number calculation (409) in which re-quantized data domain is divided at boundary points corresponding to code length transitions in order to calculate the total number of bits required for encoding for use in adjusting the numbers of allocated bits with a smaller volume of the arithmetic-logical operations.

Abstract: In an apparatus for, and a method of, encoding signals according to the present invention, a normalization coefficient for normalizing a first signal is set into a smaller interval then that of a normalization coefficient for normalizing a second signal. In other words, accuracy of the normalization coefficient at the time of normalization of a tone component is set to a higher level than that of the normalization coefficient at the time of normalization of a noise component. Accordingly, the present invention provides an efficient method of encoding. In other words, the present invention improves the accuracy of encoding of the tone component while restricting the number of bits necessary for encoding the noise component, thus improving the encoding efficiency as a whole. In the recording medium of the present invention, since signals efficiently encoded by the signal encoding apparatus or method of the present invention are recorded, a recording capacity can be effectively utilized. Further, because the signal decoder of the present invention decodes the signals encoded by the signal encoding apparatus or method of the present invention, signal error during decoding can be reduced.
