Abstract: PURPOSE:To form a polyamide-imide copolymer having excellent melt moldability and giving a molding of an excellent balance among the properties by using a combination of a specified tricarboxylic acid with a specified tetracarboxylic acid as an acid component and a specified combination of diamines as an amine component. CONSTITUTION:This copolymer is composed of structural units A of formula I, structural units B of formula II, structural units C of formula III and structural units D of formula IV. The ratio among the structural units is such that the molar ratio A/B is 95/5-50/50, the molar ratio C/D is 70/30-5/95; unit A and unit C or unit D are alternately bonded together; and the inherent viscosity is 0.2-5.0dl/g as measured in N-methylpyrrolidone in a concentration of 0.5g/dl at a temperature of 30 deg.C. In the above formulas, Z is a trifunctional aromatic group two of the three functional groups of which are bonded to the adjacent carbon atoms; a is 0 or an integer of 1-4, and b is 0, 1 or 2.

Abstract: PURPOSE:To obtain a copolymer having good melt moldability and excellent balance among the properties of a molding, by constituting it from specified proportions of three specified kinds of structural units. CONSTITUTION:A thermoplastic aromatic polyamide-imide copolymer comprising structural units (A) of formula I, structural units (B) of at least either of formulas II and III and structural units (C) of formula IV, wherein 1mol. of structural units B and C are present per mol. of structural units A, and B/C is 4-80 mol.%/96-20mol.%. In the formulas, Z is a trifunctional aromatic group of which the three functional groups are bonded to the adjacent carbon atoms, R1 is H or methyl, R2 is a 1-4C alkyl or a halogen, Y is formula I or II and a is 0 or 1-4. The most desirable process for producing this polyamide-imide copolymer comprises reacting an aromatic tricarboxylic acid anhydride chloride with an aromatic diamine (acid chloride process).

Abstract: PURPOSE:To readily and safely obtain a heat-resistant polymer at a low cost, by reacting a specific aromatic diamine solution with an aromatic tricarboxylic acid, etc., in a polar solvent in the presence of an acidic dehydration catalyst while removing mixed water and condensed water. CONSTITUTION:An aromatic dinitro compound or aromatic mononitro compound is catalytically reduced in the presence of a heterogeneous hydrogenation catalyst, e.g. platinum, in a solvent, e.g. methyl cellosolve, etc., preferably at 50-130 deg.C reaction temperature and the heterogeneous hydrogenation catalyst is then recovered by filtration. The resultant aromatic diamine solution containing water formed as a by-product is then reacted with an aromatic tricarboxylic acid, aromatic tetracarboxylic acid and/or derivative thereof in an amide based, heterocyclic ring based or sulfone based polar solvent, e.g. N,N-dimethylacetamide, etc., having >=160 deg.C, preferably >=180 deg.C boiling point in the presence of an acidic dehydration catalyst, e.g. boric acid, etc., while evaporating and removing mixed water and condensed water, preferably at >=180 deg.C reaction temperature to afford the aimed heat-resistant polymer.

Abstract: PURPOSE:To obtain the titled polymer excellent in thermal and mechanical properties and useful as a material for high-performance moldings, films, fibers, etc., by reacting at least one dihalogen compound with an alkali metal diphenolate. CONSTITUTION:A dihalogen compound mixture (A) formed by mixing dihalogen compounds (a), (b) and/or (c) of formulas I, II and/or III (wherein X is Cl or F) together at such a ratio that 100-50mol% component (a) is used per 0-50mol% components (b) and/or (c) is mixed with an alkali diphenolate (B) of formula IV (wherein M is an alkali metal and Ar is a bivalent aromatic residue) at an A to B molar ratio about 1, and the monomers are polymerized at 50-450 deg.C and at atmospheric or superatmospheric pressure for 0.5-50hr in anhydrous conditions in an inert gas atmosphere to obtain the titled polymer comprising 50-100mol% structural units of formula V and 0-50mol% structural units of formula VI (wherein Y is a group of formula VII and/or SO2) and having an inherent viscosity >=0.5 (as measured in 98% sulfuric acid at 0.5g/dl concentration and 30 deg.C).
