    Abstract: PURPOSE:To prepare a polyester in high efficiency, by supplying an acid component containing a diphenyldicarboxylic acid and a glycol component separately to a system containing a specific amount of esterification reaction product to proceed the esterification, and then carrying out the polycondensation reaction. CONSTITUTION:The objective polyester containing 25-100mol% of diphenyl-4,4'- dicarboxylic acid (hereafter called A) is prepared by (1) preparing an esterified system containing the esterification reaction product (or ester exchange reaction product) of (a) aromatic dicarboxylic acids (or their derivatives) such as terephthalic acid, containing 0-100mol% of the acid (A), wherein the amount of (A) is pref. >=40wt% of the (A) to be added in the following steps, (2) adding 1.2- 2mol, based on 1mol of the acid component, of a glycol to the above system, (3) adding a mixture of the (A) and the residual dicarboxylic acids continuously or intermittently to the system to effect the esterification reaction, and (4) carrying out the polycondensation reaction.

    Abstract: PURPOSE:To obtain a polyester having improved whiteness, titanium dioxide dispersibility, and a low diethylene glycol content, by direct polymerization in the presence of specific amounts of a phosphorus, a cobalt, and an antimony compounds. CONSTITUTION:(A) An acid component consisting mainly of terephthalic acid containing 10-1000ppm of 4-carboxybenzaldehyde (FBA) is esterified with (B) a glycol component consisting mainly of ethylene glycol to give an ester, which is incorporated with a phosphorus compound, e.g. phosphoric acid, in an amount expressed by formulas I and II: [P and Co are the amounts of the P and Co atoms (ppm); Sb is the amount of the Sb atom (ppm)]. A cobalt compound, e.g. cobalt acetate, and an antimony compound, e.g. antimony trioxide, in amounts of formulas I, II, and III: [FBA is the amount of FBA (ppm)] are added to the ester within 2-15min after the addition of the phosphorus compound. Polycondensation is then carried out to give the objective polyester.

    Abstract: PURPOSE:To reduce the amount of diethylene glyol existing in a polyester prepared by the direct polymerization method, and to improve dispersibility of titanium oxide, by carrying out the esterification in the presence of a quaternary ammonium salt and the subsequent polycondensation in the presence of a Co, Ca, Mn or Mg compound, a phosphorous compound and an Sb compound. CONSTITUTION:Dicarboxylic acids consisting mainly of terephthalic acid, and a glycol are fed in a system containing BHT (50-150% on the basis of the dicarboxylic acid) and a quaternary ammonium salt (0.001-0.02 wt.% on the basis of the dicarboxylic acid), and esterified. Subsequently the polycondensation is carried out in the presence of a phosphorus compound, one or more compounds of metals selected from Co, Ca, Mn and Mg, and an Sb compound, of the quantities expressed by the equation {M is the amount of a metal atom (Co, Ca, Mn or Mg) [ppm]; M' is the atomic weight of the metal atom; SIGMA is summation for two or more metal compounds; Sb and P is the added amount of antimony and phosphorus, respectively [ppm]}.
