    Abstract: PURPOSE:To form a vapor deposition film excellent in running property even under a high temp. and high humidity condition, by coating the single surface of a polyester film after monoaxial stretching with an aqueous water-soluble polymer solution containing hydrophobic org. compound particles or inorg. compound particles to which hydrophobic surface treatment was applied in an amount of 3-1,000mg/m and, after drying, stretching the coated film to the direction at a right angle to the stretching direction of the film before applying heat treatment thereto. CONSTITUTION:At least the single surface of a smooth polyester film after monoaxial stretching is coated with an aqueous water-soluble polymer solution containing hydrophobic org. compound particles or inorg. compound particles to which hydrophobic surface treatment was applied in solid concn. of 3-1,000mg/m . After drying, the coated film is stretched to the direction at a right angle to the stretching direction of the film and, if necessary, re-stretching is applied before heat treatment is applied to the stretched film. By this method, a coated film, wherein a discontinuous film based on the water-soluble polymer with a thickness of 500Angstrom or less is closely adhered to at least the single surface of the polyester film and fine particles are closely adhered to the film surface at the discontinuous parts of the discontinuous film and the height of the fine particles is higher than that of the discontinuous film, can be prepared.

    Abstract: A thermoplastic resin base film for a magnetic recording medium includes a thermoplastic resin film (1) and a discontinuous film (2) adhering closely to at least one surface of the thermoplastic resin film (1). The discontinuous film (2) has a thickness of not larger than 0.05µm and is composed of a polymer blend containing fine particles (3). The polymer blend comprises a water-soluble polyester copolymer and a water-soluble polymer having at least one hydroxyl group in the recurring unitthereof. Fine protrusions are formed on the discontinuous film due to the presence of the fine particles therein. A magnetic recording medium using the base film is suitable for high density magnetic recording and has extremely excellent durability to repeated use.
