    Abstract: PURPOSE:To improve the mechanical properties and resistance to oxidation, abrasion, and heat by thermally reacting and/or thermally melting a specific random copolymer with an arom. polycyclic compd. CONSTITUTION:100 pts.wt. random copolymer (A) comprising a transition metal- contg. organosilicon polymer and an arom. polycyclic compd. consisting of a thermally treated petroleum- or coal-derived pitch, wherein Si atoms of said organosilicon polymer are bonded at least partially to C atoms on arom. rings of said polycyclic compd. through Si-C linkage and 5-900 pts.wt. arom. polycyclic compd. (B) being mainly in a premesophase state are thermally reacted and/or thermally melted at 200 to 500 deg.C. Said organosilicon polymer mainly comprises a bonding unit, Si-CH2, or said bonding unit and another bonding unit, Si-Si, contains H, a lower alkyl, phenyl or silyl group as a side chain attached to Si, and contains at least one metal selected from the group consisting of Ti, Zr, and Hf bonded directly or through an oxygen atom to at least a part of Si atoms in said bonding units of the main polymer chain. Said arom. compd. (B) is obtd. by hydrogenating a petroleum- or coal-derived pitch and thermally treating the resulting product under a reduced pressure.

    Abstract: PURPOSE:To obtain the subject polymer which can give a high-strength and high-elasticity carbonaceous inorganic fiber by heat-treating a specified organosilicon polymer/polycyclic aromatic compound random copolymer and a premesophase polycyclic aromatic compound. CONSTITUTION:An organosilicon polymer having a ratio of the total number of the combined units Si-CH2 to the total number of the bonding units Si-Si in the range of 1:(0-20) and having a substituent such as H, a lower alkyl, a phenyl or a silyl as a side chain of the silicon atom is prepared. The carbon atoms of the aromatic ring of a polycyclic aromatic compound are bonded to the silicon atoms of this polymer to produce a random copolymer. 100 pts.wt. this random copolymer and 5 to 900 pts.wt. premesophase polycyclic aromatic compound obtained by hydrogenating a petroleum- or coal-derived pitch and heat-treating the product in a vacuum are subjected to heat reaction and/or heat melting at 200 to 500 deg.C to obtain a silicon-containing polycyclic aromatic polymer.

    Abstract: PURPOSE:To prevent the leaning of fibrous bundles in a matrix and to improve the mechanical characteristics of a composite material by regulating either the warp or the woof to inorganic reinforcing fiber and providing the other with the compsn. same as that of the metal as the matrix. CONSTITUTION:In the reinforcing fibrous textile, either the warp or the woof is the bundles of inorganic reinforcing fiber and the other is the metallic wire having the compsn. same as that of the metal as the matrix. As the inorganic reinforcing fiber, the fiber composed of ceramics such as carbide, nitride, boride and oxide or of carbon can be used. The reinforcing fibrous textile is compounded with the matrix metal having the compsn. same as that of the metallic wire into the fiber reinforcing metallic composite material. In the obtd. composite material, the metallic wire is integrated into the matrix metal, by which there occurs a state where the inorganic reinforcing fiber is drawn and arranged toward one direction. In this way, since there is no winding caused by the crossing of each fiber bundle, the composite material having high bending strength, tensile strength, etc., can be obtd.

    Abstract: PURPOSE:To improve fracture toughness, compressive strength, etc., by kneading specific reinforcing surface-treated inorganic fibers with ceramic powder and calcining the resultant mixture. CONSTITUTION:Inorganic fibers consisting of (a) an amorphous substance consisting of Si, MC (M is Ti or Zr) and O, (b) beta-SiC, MC, a solid solution of the beta-SiC with MC and/or respective crystalline fine particles of MC1-x (x is 0-1) and an aggregate of amorphous SiO2 and MO2 or a mixed system of the components (a) with (b) are coated with a solution of at least component selected from polytitanocarbosilanes or polyzirconocarbosilanes, silane coupling agents, phenolic resins having 500-20000 average molecular weight and petroleum pitch in an organic solvent and dried to afford reinforcing surface-treated inorganic fibers (A) having a surface layer of 0.1-50mum thickness. The resultant component (A) is then kneaded with ceramic powder or an organic substance capable of providing ceramic by heating to be a matrix (B) and the obtained mixture is press formed under 50-5000kg/cm pressure and calcined at 600-2400 deg.C.

    Abstract: PURPOSE:To enhance strength by constituting an electromagnetic-waves transmitting material which is constituted of an amorphous inorganic fiber composed of silicon, carbon, oxygen and titanium or zirconium in specific ranges of percentage by weight, which has a specific resistivity value and which can transmit a specific range of microwaves selectively and by constituting a composite substance reinforced with the material. CONSTITUTION:An electromagnetic-waves transmitting material is constituted of an inorganic fiber composed substantially of Si, C, Ti or Zr, and O, and it has a resistivity of 15 -10 OMEGA.cm. The inorganic fiber contains 26-58wt.% Si, 25-62wt.% C, 0.5-30wt.% Ti or Zr, and 2-31wt.% O. The amorphous inorganic fiber constituting the electromagnetic-waves transmitting material transmits microwaves in a range of 500MHz-3000GHz selectively and its matrix is strengthened. If necessary, the electromagnetic-waves transmitting material can be used as a composite substance which uses a plastic or a ceramic as a matrix.
