Abstract: 1350838 Expelling air from bagged products UNION CARBIDE CORP 25 June 1971 [26 June 1970] 30011/71 Heading B8C Air is expelled from a plastics bag containing meat by partially immersing the bag in water. While the bag is immersed, its open end is gathered and sealed. A bag to be immersed is transferred from a rollerway 26 onto a stationary endless conveyer 21 located above a water tank 11. The open end of the bag is pushed over a spring loaded gate 51 of a bag closing device 41 to be retained in an opening 30. The bag is clamped onto the conveyer 21 by discs 34 which are mounted on slack cables 34 and which are forced against the bag by piston and cylinder units 40. The conveyer 21 and the bag retaining devices are pivoted downwards about an axis 42 to immerse the bag, apart from its open end, in the tank 11. After expulsion of air, but while the bag is still immersed, a plate 52 is pivoted to gather the open end of the bag prior to the application of a sealing staple. The staple may be applied below the water level. The conveyer 21 is returned to the horizontal and motivated to move the closed bag to an output conveyer 47. Two air expelling devices may be served by single input and output conveyers, Fig. 7 (not shown).
