Abstract: The invention provides artificial intelligence-enabled image recognition methods and systems for continuously training a computer system to accurately identify a surgical item in a tray using at least 100 randomly created 2-dimensional images of a 3-dimensional synthetic item having unique identifiers assigned to the images or item. The invention also provides an artificial intelligence-enabled image recognition method and system for use to determine whether surgical instruments are present or missing on a surgical tray, and, if applicable, identifying those missing. In one aspect, a server receives an image and analyzes the image with a deep convolutional neural network to classify the type of tray and then compares a list of items that should be on the tray to that which the computer recognizes on the tray to generate an output displayed to a user identifying the items present and/or missing.

Abstract: Systems and methods for automatically populating a post-operative report of a surgical procedure are disclosed. A system may include at least one processor configured to implement a method including receiving an identifier of a patient, an identifier of a healthcare provider, and surgical footage of a surgical procedure performed on the patient. The method may include analyzing frames of the surgical footage to identify phases of the surgical procedure based on interactions between medical instruments and biological structures and, based on the interactions, associate a name with each phase. The method may include determining a beginning of each phase and associating a time marker with the beginning of each phase. The method may include populating a post-operative report with the patient identifier, the names of the phases, and time markers associated with the phases in a manner that enables the health care provider to alter the post-operative report.

Abstract: Systems and methods are provided to mitigate potential collisions between a person and robotic system. In various embodiments, a robotic surgical system includes a robotic linkage including joints, an endoscope coupled to a distal portion of the robotic linkage and configured to capture stereoscopic images, and a controller in communication with the endoscope. The controller executes instructions to analyze the stereoscopic images from the endoscope to identify a human-held tool in the stereoscopic images and to estimate a type and/or pose of the human-held tool, infer a position of a person holding the human-held tool based on the type and/or pose of the human-held tool, determine a spatial relationship between the person and the robotic linkage based on the inferred position of the person, and generate a warning of potential collision between the person and the robotic linkage based on the determined spatial relationship.
