Abstract:
A membrane switch comprised of first and second flexible layers having corresponding patterns of metallization thereon, these layers being separated by an apertured spacer. The first layer is of a larger size than the spacer and the second layer is of a smaller size than the spacer so that when the three are superposed, a border on the first layer and spacer are exposed to meet the second layer. Completing the assembly is a label layer which is of a flexible, non-conductive material having a desired pattern of graphics printed on it and an adhesive coated undersurface. When the label layer is pressed against the exposed surface of the second substrate, it bonds all three of the lower layers together and creates a seal around the perimeter of the switch assembly. With the label layer being of a greater size than the other three layers, it may also be used to affix the composite switch to the appliance on which it would be used.
Abstract:
A membrane switch control panel arrangement and label assembly for labeling same, for providing in-field applied identification of the control panel legend upon assembly of the circuitry switching involved, in which the control panel arrangement is of the keyboard switch type providing for touch sensitive switch actuation, with the control panel arrangement circuit board circuiting switch sets, membrane or touch sensitive switch components therefor, and the control panel legend sheet switch location indicia therefor being arranged in superposed modular group form, oriented as to the switch contacts and associated observation glow bulb involving each switch set, which modules are columnarily arranged in spaced apart rows and extending crosswise of the control panel in a columnar configuration. The legend sheet is delineated to receive and have adhered thereto individual in-field marked labels from the label assembly that are to bear the switch identification indicia of the adjacent legend sheet switch location indicia row. The label assembly comprises a carrier sheet and an adhesive backed label forming sheet that are especially segmented to remain united for application to the labels, by using a typewriter or the like, the switch function indicia involved that becomes known only when the assembly of the switch components and controlment has been completed, after which the individual labels may be manually separated from the carrier sheet and adhered to the respective legend sheet blank spaces.
Abstract:
A composite top membrane designed for use with membrane-type switch arrays which is substantially smooth and ripple free. The composite membrane comprises:(1) a layer of plastic foam which is coated on each side with a pressure sensitive adhesive;(2) a decorative cover layer formed from plastic and having graphic indicia on one or both surfaces and which is adhesively affixed to one side of the aforementioned layer of plastic foam; and(3) a sheet of plastic having a significant memory property having its first surface adhesively affixed to the other side of the foam layer and a pattern of conductive metallization on its second surface. The layer of foam material provides a flat, resilient interface between the decorative cover layer and the relatively convoluted surface of the flexible printed circuit top membrane. As such, the decorative layer remains flat and free from optical irregularities which would detract from its aesthetic impression.
Abstract:
A tactile snap-action element for use in keyboards, the element comprising an arcuately shaped invertible dome defining a first contour and a dome actuating protrusion defining a second contour, the protrusion being integral with the dome and being non-invertible. The element is operated by an actuation force which acts directly or indirectly through the non-inverting protrusion to invert the first contour and to provide tactile feedback. The keyboard includes a plurality of keys, each key comprising an element, a conductive circuit associated with the first contour and moveable with the inversion of the first contour to electrically contact a second conductive circuit associated with the element.
Abstract:
In an electronic calculator essentially comprising a multidigit display, a keyboard and a data processor unit, a multidigit liquid crystal display is deposited together with integral key actuators of the keyboard of a flexible circuit film which carries electrical conductor leaves in a desired pattern. The conductor leaves to be in contact with terminals of the liquid crystal display are formed to extend in the direction of length of the liquid crystal display to thereby establish room for a battery compartment.
Abstract:
Planar resistive connecting means for the edges of a rectangular resistive graphic area has a higher effective resistance parallel to the edges of the resistive graphic area than that of the resistive graphic area. This higher effective resistance is formed by means of configuring the connecting areas such as by forming outer edges at acute angles with the edges of the resistive graphic area or by forming slits transverse to the edges of the resistive graphic area. There is also disclosed a combination of a resistive graphic area surrounded by a plurality of planar conductors forming multi-bit digital switching facilities operated by a common conductive plane.
Abstract:
A method of forming an insulator and electrode member is disclosed, in its preferred form, as including an insulator having a first face supporting a uniform height conductive layer. A plurality of first electrode members are formed in the conductive layer by etching away or otherwise forming an array of apertures therein. A plurality of second electrode members are simultaneously formed either by printing, screening or other similar approach forming conductive material within and laterally spaced from the array of apertures.
Abstract:
A price board selection switch assembly for facilitating the operation of selectively setting and of changing the various prices at which a plurality of respective merchandising machine delivery units will dispense articles of merchandise in which a plurality of sliding contacts are mounted for movement along respective first printed product line conductors on the undersurface of an upper board and for movement of spring fingers on the contacts over lines of holes in a detent board for selective engagement with second printed price line conductors carried by the upper surface of a lower board and extending in a direction generally perpendicular to that of the first conductors.
Abstract:
A multiple switch construction for a keyboard or the like produced as a flat panel embodying laminates of electrical conductors in desired patterns, assembled as stratifications in close proximity and separated by spacers. Individual depressible means operating through resilient members urge movable switch elements into contact with fixed electrical conductors with a rotary, wiping action to insure positive electrical contact.
Abstract:
A printed circuit keyboard having contacts thereon with leads from the contacts passing through the board and connected to conductors on the underside of the board. A ground plane in the form of a conductive sheet is positioned above the contacts and biased out of contact therefrom. This sheet could be Mylar plated with nickel. The Mylar sheet is positioned over an apertured member aligned with the contacts to provide the biasing. The Mylar is sufficiently taut so that only one contact can be positioned against the depressed Mylar sheet at one time. A cellophane or other member can be placed over the Mylar and aligned with the apertures to provide numeric indicators for the keyboard.
