Abstract: Catalyst elements for the oxidn. and redn. of pollutants in exhaust gases comprise a stainless steel support plate surface-roughened by known chemical or physical methods coated with a layer of at least one metal oxide and then with a thin film of at least one noble metal, e.g. Pt, Prd, Ru, Ir, Os or Rh. The catalyst elements have high activity, both for the oxidn. of CO and hydrocarbons and for the redn. of NOx. The stainless steel pref. contains Ni; the higher the intended working temp. the higher the Ni content. the rough surface is pref. obtd. by spraying the steel plate with a layer of nickel steel of the same compsn. of the support using a plasma jet. The metal oxide layer can be obtd. by (i) oxidising the components of the steel itself by treating the depassivated steel with oxalic acid, citric acid, Cl3COOH, HNO3, or HF or (ii) coating with a layer of one or more oxides of Cu, Mn, Cr, Ni, Mg, Al. La, Zr (stabilised with Ca), Th and Ce. Method (ii) can be effected by immersion in a soln. of the nitrate, sulphate or oxalate of the metal(s) in question, followed by heat treatment in a controlled atmosphere, orby spraying using a plasma, pneumatic, hydraulic or ultrasonic technique.

Abstract: A process is described for the regeneration of palladium metal catalysts which are useful in the process for the synthesis of esters from olefins, carboxylic acids and molecular oxygen. The regeneration process comprises the following sequential steps: (a) washing the used catalyst with an aqueous hydrochloric acid solution containing hydrazine; (b) partially drying the catalyst to a moisture content of about 65 to 95% of saturation; (c) chlorinating the partially dried catalyst with chloride gas; (d) treating the chlorinated catalyst with moist air to remove excess chlorine and to insure even moisture distribution; (e) reducing the chlorinated catalyst by contact with an aqueous alkaline reducing solution; (f) washing the reduced catalyst to remove residual chlorides; and (g) drying the resulting regenerated catalyst. One particular application for the process is the regeneration of an alumina supported palladium metal-containing catalyst which has been employed in the vapor phase synthesis of unsaturated esters from olefins, organic acids and oxygen.

Abstract: 1435966 Cross-linked copolymers CESKOSLOVENSKA AKADEMIE VED 2 May 1973 1973 [2 May 1972] 20888/73 Heading C3P [Also in Division Bl] A hydrophilic cross-linked polymer which contains reactive -CN groups is produced by copolymerizing a monomer mixture containing 0À1 to 30 mol per cent of a cross-linking agent based on the total amount of the monomer mixture, a major part of which monomer mixture consists of a polyhydric alcohol ester of acrylic or methacrylic acid and acrylonitrile or methacrylonitrile, in the presence of 0 to 50% by weight of a polar solvent based on the total amount of monomer mixture and solvent. Exemplified cross-linking agents are divinyl benzene, dimethacrylates of ethylene, diethylene and triethylene glycols and diacrylates of ethylene and diethylene glycols. The polyhydric alcohol ester may be a monoacrylate or methacrylate of ethylene, diethylene or triethylene glycol and the polymerization may be carried out in the presence of various azo and peroxy initiators, optionally supplemented by u.v. radiation or ammonium persulphate. The polymer gels may be used for contact lenses, biological implants, dialysis membranes or for sorbtion of heavy metals.
