Abstract: An electrostatic pump comprises a body having upstream and downstream chambers insulated from each other, and joined by constricted channel, adjacent the upstream mouth of which is the sharp conductive tip of an injection electrode. The channel around the conductive tip is shaped to promote laminar non-turbulent liquid flow past the tip, under the influence of a high potential difference between the injection electrode and a discharge electrode in the downstream chamber.

Abstract: A spray coating system including a gun from which electrostatically charged liquid coating material, atomized with the aid of a first air stream and shaped in a desired fan pattern with a second air stream, is emitted to coat an object spaced therefrom. Separate signal-controlled valves are provided to independently control the liquid coating flow rate, atomization air stream flow rate, and fan-shaping air stream flow rate. Signalcontrolled electrostatic voltage regulating means are provided to control the magnitude of the electrostatic voltage used to electrostatically charge the liquid coating particles. An electronic controller having means for entering the identity of a particular article to be coated and a «look-up» table memory correlating part identity with the requisite voltage level and flow rates for the coating material, atomizing air stream, and fan-shaping air stream for various articles automatically controls the electrostratic voltage source and the various valves to provide the necessary voltage and flow rates previously empirically determined and stored in the controller memory.

Abstract: Electrostatic or electrogasdynamic coating apparatus includes a coating gun, e.g. for use with dry powder, whose structure defines a through passage leading from an inlet tube (10) operatively connected to a source of particulate coating material to a discharge barrel (12). A central needle cathode electrode (15) is mounted in a constricted region of the passage, its tip being adjacent an annular porous metal anode electrode (25) whose central opening defines part of the passage. A flow of the material is induced along the passage by a first pressurized gas (e.g. air) stream fed from a first supply formation (24) to enter the passage in the region of the electrodes, in which region the particles receive an electric charge from the latter. At the same time a second pressurized gas steam, which is controlled independently of the first stream, is fed from a second supply formation (24) through the porous electrode itself to prevent build-up of particles on the acting portion thereof.
