    Abstract: A sample to be measured, a black reference and at least one reference having a color similar to that of the sample are exposed successively and cyclicly to the same incident light beam, the light beams which are reflected successively by the sample and the references are detected photoelectrically, the ratio of the intensities of the light beams reflected by a sample and one reference color on the one hand and by the black reference and a reference color on the other hand is established electronically, the second ratio is subtracted electronically from the first and a difference which is directly proportional to the brilliance of the color of the sample is automatically obtained during each exposure or measurement cycle at a determined measurement frequency (FIG. 1).

    Abstract: Method and means useful in reflectance measurement is provided wherein radiation of one wavelength is separated from radiation of a different wavelength by the use of a composite of at least two components, one of which is absorptive of said one wavelength radiation and is highly transmissive of said other wavelength radiation, and the other of which is reflective of radiation of both of said wavelengths. The method and means are particularly adapted for use in fluorescent radiation measurement to prevent high intensity residual incident excitation radiation from interfering with measurement of the relatively low intensity fluorescent radiation.

    Abstract: The Brinell (or Vickers) hardness of a material is measured automatically by indenting the workpiece 14 using a bar 10 carrying a ball 12. The surface of the workpiece is illuminated by means of a collimated light source 22 and the surface is imaged in a camera system 24 onto a charge coupled device including an array of photosensitive elements. The indentation 30 appears as an annular dark area in the image, the size of which is measured within the camera 24. The camera 24 and the light source 22 are rotatable about the bar 10 to enable measurement of the diameter of the indentation 30 in two directions at right angles.
