Abstract: 457,129. Television. TINGLEY, G. R., and BAIRD TELEVISION, Ltd., 58, Victoria Street, Westminster. May 22, 1935, No. 14968. [Class 40 (iii)] Picture and synchronizing signals are fed through a network 6, 7, of high impedance to a screening - grid valve 1, which suppresses the picture signals by its grid current, and is followed by a second valve 10, which operates on the bottom bend of its characteristic curve. The high-resistance 6 of one megohm is in series with a low-capacity condenser 7 of 10- farads. The impulses at the picture frequency are set up across one part 3 of the anode load of the valve 1, and those at the line frequency are set up across another part 2. The framing signals are applied to the low-impedance valve 10, which feeds a synchronizing-circuit of low impedance, as described in Specification 456,666. The two valves may be contained in the same envelope. Specification 443,031 also is referred to.

Abstract: 455,048. Valve circuits. TINGLEY, G. R., and BAIRD TELEVISION, Ltd., 58, Victoria Street, Westminster. April 9, 1935, No. 11008. [Classes 40 (iii) and 40 (v)] According to one aspect of the invention, synchronizing signals are intercalated in television signals by applying them to the winding 5 of a magnetron which has cathode 2, anode 4 and grid 3 and which acts as an amplifier of the television signals applied across resistance 6. The synchronizing signals inhibit the anode current. According to the other aspect of the invention, synchronizing signals are isolated from the mixed signal by applying the mixed signal to the winding of a magnetron which has a biassing current so that only the synchronizing impulses allow the magnetron to conduct or alternatively to pass current. The invention is not restricted to its application to television, but is applicable to mixing or separating other electric signals.

Abstract: 444,360. Television. GRAHAM, G. E. G., and BAIRD TELEVISION, Ltd., 58, Victoria Street, Westminster. Feb. 19, 1935, No. 5337. [Class 40 (iii)] The frequency of the lines or the pictures in the scanning in a receiver is automatically varied to accord with any of a plurality of different transmissions. Tuned filter circuits 3, 4 operating switches through a rectifier, or mechanical filters producing different mechanical movements, are severally operated by the linefrequency or other prominent components of the different signals. The relays vary at least one 5 of the time-base oscillators necessary for a cathode-ray tube 2. Alternatively, light from a modulated source is caused to fall on one or another of two sets of mirrors on a rotating drum, Fig. 2 (not shown).

Abstract: 440,912. Converting. BROWN, A. J., and BAIRD TELEVISION, Ltd., 58, Victoria Street, Westminster. Nov. 6, 1934, No. 31907. [Class 38 (ii)] In order to obtain steady D.C. at a voltage suitable for energizing the anode circuit of a cathode ray tube in a television reeeiver, A.C. from a low frequency source (25 to 100 cycles), is first converted to high frequency and then rectified and smoothed, the necessary voltage transformation being effected either before, after, and partly before and partly after the frequency conversion. In one arrangement, Fig. 1, a high frequency oscillation generator comprising a pair of valves 2 connected in push-pull relationship to a low frequency input transformer 1 and to a high frequency output transformer 5 is used in association with a rectifier 8 and smoothing circuit 9, 10. In another arrangement, Fig. 2 (not shown), the frequency converter comprises a condenserdischarge tube relaxation oscillation generator fed from the low frequency A.C. source through a valve rectifier. Further, in a television receiver, the anode potential for the cathode ray tube may be obtained by rectifying and smoothing part of the output from the higher frequency scanning oscillator.

[Class 97 (i)] A polarizing prism of the kind in which unwanted light is suppressed within the prism comprises a mass of doubly-refracting material having a plurality of ray-separating interfaces. The prism shown is made up of four triangular prisms 1, 2, 3, 4, which fit together so as to have two plane interfaces which intersect within the prism. The optical axes of the four parts are parallel to each other and parallel to the lightentrance face 6. The interfaces are preferably formed by air films, the triangular prisms being spaced apart by pieces of aluminium foil. The line of intersection of the interfaces is parallel to the face 6 and at rightangles to the optical axis of the prism. The angle 5 is preferably about 37‹ 12 , and the two interfaces are equally inclined to the face 6. The finished prism is preferably made of cylindrical form.

The socket 14 is attached to a second length of conductor or to a conductor 17 within a screening structure 13. The screw ring 3 abuts on a shoulder 2 on the outer conductor and screws either on to the periphery of a similar flange on a second length of conductor or on to a collar 12 on the structure 13. Insulating bushes 15, 11 space the concentric conducting- members apart.

Abstract: 436,809. Television. LANCE, T. M. C., and BAIRD TELEVISION, Ltd., 58, Victoria Street, Westminster. May 1, 1934, Nos. 13114 and 25120. [Class 40 (iii)] A synchronizing signal consists of a plurality of impulses of which the first is of greater amplitude than the succeeding impulses which preferably decrease rapidly in amplitude. The initial impulse is preferably greater than any picture signal and may be in the "white" direction. A scanning disc 1, Fig. 1, has slits 5 to allow light from a source 6 to produce impulses in a photo-electric cell 7, which are applied to the grid of a valve 11 to discharge a condenser 12. The condenser 12 is associated with a tuned circuit 15, 16, 18 so that its discharge initiates a train of damped oscillations which are amplified at 17 and mixed with the picture signals. The combined signal comprises picture signals x, Fig. 3, separated by synchronizing signals y. The method may also be adapted for an electron beam transmitter by coupling the deflecting oscillators to the tuned circuit 15, 16, 18, Fig. 2 (not shown). Specifications 269,834, [Class 40 (iii)], 368,721, and 436,108, are referred to.
