Abstract: A television system is provided which includes a broadcast data receiver (BDR) for receiving data from a broadcaster at a remote location. The receiver has memory for storing data and the broadcast data relates to at least one television programme provided in a first version for viewing on a display screen at one or more pre-determined times. The first or a further version of said television programme is transmitted to the receiver from the broadcaster prior to the pre-determined time scheduled for showing the first programme version and is stored in the memory. The first or further version of the television programme is viewable by a user only once certain pre-designated criteria are met. The criteria may be a scheduled time or the transmission or input of an authorisation code.

Abstract: A broadcast data system is provided which includes a broadcast data receiver. The receiver receives and processes data from which television and/or radio programmes can be generated for selection by a user and auxiliary information can be provided in the form of an EPG for display on a display screen. The system includes a means whereby the user can selectively rate television and/or radio programmes indicated as available for viewing on the EPG and, on the basis of the ratings selected by the user, the broadcast data receiver selects a programme for viewing and/or generates a display to indicate to the user when one or more programmes are available for viewing. The rating may be a numerical value or be either a rating or no rating for a particular program. The system may include means to rate all episodes of a series if one episode is rated by the user.

Abstract: The invention relates to a broadcast data receiver of the type used to receive data from a remote location, process the same and generate audio, video and/or auxiliary data. The receivers typically include a UART internally which is required to be provided with external connection means. Conventionally an additional connection means is provided which adds to the expense of the receiver. The current invention allows connection with the UART via a SCART connection socket which is already required for other data transfers for the operation of the receiver and therefore overcomes the need for the additional connection means to be provided.

Some of the data can be used to generate an electronic programme guide (EPG) on the screen. The invention provides for the generation of a display on the screen indicting programme information relating to a programme available for viewing from a viewer selected subset of television channels. The display can relate to one programme on one channel, such as indicating the start time of the same, or the display can be provided in an animated manner to indicate programme information for a range of channels.
