The present invention relates to a method and apparatus for portable devices that display markup data. A processing unit is configured to detect automatically parts in markup data content, each part corresponding to one type of user input mode. The unit is configured to display each part separately on a screen of the display unit such that one type of input mode is provided for each screen.

A method for implementing spelling error detection and correction for a two-way mobile communication device (100). The two-way mobile communication device has a display screen (104) and a telephone-type keypad (116) where a number of characters are mapped onto each key in a many to one fashion. When the end of a character string (e.g., a word) is indicated by the input of a termination symbol (e.g., a space or "#") then that character string is compared to a plurality of character strings stored in a dictionary. If no match is found, the character string is considered misspelled. Then, individual character elements of the subject character string are systematically replaced by the character elements mapped to the same key with the result being compared to the entries resident in the dictionary. Matching character strings are retrieved and presented to the user for examination and selection.

Techniques for controlling a network connection in accordance with connection information associated with a destination location on a network are disclosed. Controlling of the network connection in accordance with connection information associated with the destination location can be achieved in a variety of ways. One way is in the selection of a network transport (e.g., bearer selection). Another way is in the configuration of parameters associated with the connection (i.e., connection parameters). In either case, the connection information includes information with which the selection of the network transport and/or connection parameters can be made. The controlling of the network connection impacts quality of service provided to a requestor that is requesting use of the connection.

The present invention relates to navigation of the Internet by a two-way interactive communication mobile device capable of wireless communication, via a link server (300), with service providers or network servers on the Internet. After the mobile device has established a communication session with the link server over a wireless network (308), a control engine 320 in the link server is initiated and uses the computing resources of the link server device so as to be responsible for tasks that require considerable computing power and memory. such as processing of URL requests, interpretation of markup language files, management of data cache and variable states. Working with a message processor (315) in the server device, the control engine communicates with an interface engine in the mobile device using a compact data format that is efficiently transportable in the wireless data network. The interface engine typically performs tasks that do not require considerable computing power and memory, such as receiving input data from users, and the rendering of the compact data format received from the link server device, to cause the mobile device to display contents in the markup language files on a display screen.

The present invention relates to a method for displaying markup language documents on a first computer system. A client computer (260) has a general purpose computer program execution environment and receives programs for execution in the environment so as to generate a display on an output device and receive input from an input device. A translation computer system (210), on retrieving a markup language document from a storage device (280) in response to a request from the client computer, systematically parses the document to generate a corresponding computer program embodying the content and semantics of the document and then transmits the generated computer program to the client computer to enable display of the markup language document.

The present invention discloses a method and apparatus for providing visual interfaces to mobile subscriber account services suitable for mobile devices (106) with a small screen (116) and phone keypad (118) communicating, via a wireless data network (102), with a remotely located server device (114) providing the mobile subscriber account services. The mobile subscriber services are accessed through the wireless data network, the server device comprising an account manager managing a user account associated with the client device. The screen display comprises a plurality of user interface components, each corresponding to a particular aspect of the mobile subscriber services. Apart from the interactive voice system and other related systems providing access to subscriber account services, the present invention provides direct visual interface to the mobile subscriber account services and allows mobile subscribers to efficiently, visually and interactively, for example, access desired information and place service requests, through the limited screen and phone keypad at anytime from anywhere with limited costs to the service providers and maximum convenience to mobile subscribers.
