    Abstract: A method of forming a peat based product comprises the steps of mixing raw peat with a binder, e.g. Portland Cement, and an amount of internal draining agent for the peat, e.g. hydrated lime, and pressing the resulting mix in a mould to remove at least half the chemically free water content from the mix. The amount of internal draining agent for the peat is preferably not less by weight than about half the amount of binder, and the water content of the raw peat is usually at least 90% by weight and this may be reduced to less than 35% by weight of the mix during pressing. In a variation, a mixture of ground silica sand and hydrated lime initially provides the draining agent, and the pressed article is cured in an autoclave, the silica and hydrated lime combining during autoclaving to provide the binder.

    Abstract: An endoprosthetic elbow joint device has a humeral component in the form of two like frusto-cones coaxially connected at their narrow ends and with their wider ends mutually convergently inclined to wedge into the intracondylar notch in the humerus when resected. This component is secured with cement, the component end faces being provided with a relieved structure of grooves or ribs extending in the relevant directions of inclination. The device also has an ulnar component of less than semi-circular toroidal form with its radially inner face complementary to and engaged with the above double cone. Again cement fixation is used in the ulna with a suitable relieved structure to key the component. Preferably this structure includes a chordally-directed groove to allow passage of a bone screw longitudinally through the olecranon so that the latter can be detached to expose the implantation site and thereafter reattached.

    Abstract: The card reader has a luminous source (44) mounted on a base. A photosensitive device (41) receives light from the source, is also mounted on the base and transmits a signal having a characteristic which represents the quantity of light received. A device (48) controlled by the presence or absence of card projections (16a) modifies the quantity of light falling on the photosensitive element and has a free and extension (38) and a fixed end (40). At least a part of the element between its two ends froms a spring. The extension is pushed upwards by a ball bearing (34) which is itself pushed up by the projections (16a) on the card (16) as the card (16) passes through the reader.
