Abstract: The present invention discloses a method and an apparatus for encoding an image through a dynamic screen partition size allocation scheme. The method for encoding an image includes the steps of acquiring information on the number of threads that can be simultaneously processed; spatially partitioning an input image based on the number of the threads; and encoding the partitioned regions in parallel. The partitioning step includes a step of estimating a time to perform the encoding in order to maintain an approximately uniform encoding time for the partitioned regions and determining an image partition size based on the estimated encoding time. Accordingly, the screen partition size is dynamically allocated, thereby minimizing the difference in execution rate between the threads and improving the whole video encoding rate.
