Abstract: Abstract of the Disclosure A wireless electronic device may include antenna structures and antenna tuning circuitry. The device may include a display mounted within a housing. A peripheral conductive member may run around the edges of the display and housing. Dielectric-filled gaps may divide the peripheral conductive member into individual segments. A ground plane may be formed within the housing. The ground plane and the segments of the peripheral conductive member may form antennas in upper and lower portions of the housing. The antenna tuning circuitry may include switchable inductor circuits and variable capacitor circuits for the upper and lower antennas. The switchable inductor circuits associated with the upper antenna may be tuned to provide coverage in at least two high-band frequency ranges of interest, whereas the variable capacitor circuits associated with the upper antenna may be tuned to provide coverage in at least two low-band frequency ranges of interest.

Abstract: Electronic devices (10) are provided that contain wireless communications circuitry. The wireless communications circuitry may include radio-frequency transceiver circuitry and antenna structures (40). A parallel-fed loop antenna may be formed from portions of a conductive bezel and a ground plane (68). The antenna may operate in multiple communications bands. The bezel may surround a peripheral portion of a display that is mounted to the front of an electronic device (10). The bezel may contain a gap (18). Antenna feed terminals (58,54) for the antenna may be located on opposing sides of the gap (18). A variable capacitor (212) may bridge the gap (18). An inductive element (98) may bridge the gap and the antenna feed terminals (58,54). A switchable inductor (98') may be coupled in parallel with the inductive element (98). Tunable matching circuitry (M1) may be coupled between one of the antenna feed terminals (58) and a conductor in a coaxial cable (52) connecting the transceiver circuitry to the antenna.

Abstract: A cavity-backed antenna 26, or an electronic device, comprises a cavity-backed resonant antenna element 70 where the cavity 72 is formed from a dielectric support structure 112 covered with a layer of conductive material 74, 76. The dielectric material may be a moulded plastic support structure 112 with surfaces covered by a conductive metal such as copper or aluminium via any suitable deposition technique. The resonant antenna element 70 may take any form including one or more open and/or closed slot arrangements in a conductive plate or conductive layer formed on a printed circuit board, planar inverted-F antenna arrangements, patch antennas or various monopole and/or dipole printed antenna arrangements. The antenna may be arranged to operate in one or more different frequency bands. The cavity backed antenna 26 may be used in a housing associated with an electronic device such as a computer or a mobile phone. An antenna window may be provided in the said housing where the window may be formed by a region of dielectric material or from antenna window slots formed in a conductive member such as a conductive wall of the electronic device housing.

Abstract: An electronic device (10) has wireless communications circuitry (34) including an adjustable antenna system (40) coupled to a radio-frequency transceiver (90). The adjustable antenna system (40) may include one or more adjustable electrical components (168) that are controlled by storage and processing circuitry (28) in the electronic device (10). The adjustable electrical components (168) may include switches and components that can be adjusted between numerous different states. The adjustable electrical components (168) may be coupled between antenna system components such as transmission line elements (140), matching network elements (152), antenna elements (160) and antenna feeds. By adjusting the adjustable electrical components, the storage and processing circuitry (28) can tune the adjustable antenna system (40) to ensure that the adjustable antenna system (40) covers communications bands of interest.
