    Abstract: An electronic device (10) has wireless communications circuitry (34) including an adjustable antenna system (40) coupled to a radio-frequency transceiver (90). The adjustable antenna system (40) may include one or more adjustable electrical components (168) that are controlled by storage and processing circuitry (28) in the electronic device (10). The adjustable electrical components (168) may include switches and components that can be adjusted between numerous different states. The wireless communications circuitry may include radio-frequency transceiver circuitry and antenna structures.     Abstract: An adjustable antenna system, or an electronic device 10, comprises: a conductive member 180 in an electronic device housing, where there is at least one dielectric gap 182 in the conductive member and there is at least one adjustable electrical component 168 arranged such that it can adjust the electrical characteristics associated with the said gap 182. The conductive member 180 may be a rectangular metal structure substantially surrounding the periphery walls of an electronic device 10 or a display bezel. The adjustable electronic component 168 may be one or more switches and/or variable and/or fixed capacitors, inductors and/or resistors which may be connected across the gap 182 or at least have one terminal coupled to the peripheral conductive member 180. A control system may be included to adjust the electronic component 168 to obtain the desired tuning of an antenna system. Further disclosed is an electronic device 10 which comprises a radio-frequency transceiver 90 coupled to an adjustable antenna system which includes an adjustable electrical component 168 which is coupled to a circuit and which is controlled by signals from storage and processing circuitry to tune and adjust the antenna system to obtain desired communication bands.

A parallel-fed loop antenna may be formed from portions of a conductive bezel and a ground plane (68). The antenna may operate in multiple communications bands. The bezel may surround a peripheral portion of a display that is mounted to the front of an electronic device (10). The bezel may contain a gap (18). Antenna feed terminals (58,54) for the antenna may be located on opposing sides of the gap (18). A variable capacitor (212) may bridge the gap (18). An inductive element (98) may bridge the gap and the antenna feed terminals (58,54). A switchable inductor (98') may be coupled in parallel with the inductive element (98). Tunable matching circuitry (M1) may be coupled between one of the antenna feed terminals (58) and a conductor in a coaxial cable (52) connecting the transceiver circuitry to the antenna.
