Abstract: A user equipment (UE) and associated method performs a voice call with a network, including exchanging voice packets, determines an uplink data transmission to be performed concurrently with the voice call and stores the uplink data transmission in a buffer. A base station and associated method performs a voice call with a UE, determines a downlink data transmission for the UE is to be performed concurrently with the voice call and stores the downlink data transmission in a buffer when the UE is a predetermined type. A UE and associated method associates with a first access point (AP), determines first performance characteristics of a connection with the first AP, determines second performance characteristics of a potential connection with a second AP, declares a radio link failure when the second performance characteristics exceed the first performance characteristics to trigger a handover procedure from the first AP to the second AP.

Abstract: A user equipment (UE) and network entity implement improved communication methods which enable a UE to operate using differing modes of operation without detaching from a network. The UE may send first information indicating its capabilities to the network entity and may receive a first indication based on the first information. The first indication may indicate that the UE operate according to a first mode of operation. The UE may receive a second indication based on an occurrence of a first condition detectable at the network entity. The second indication may indicate that the UE operate according to a second mode of operation different from the first mode of operation. The first condition may be an initialization of a real time data packet session for the UE or may be a first message sent by the UE in response to one or more radio conditions exceeding a threshold.

Abstract: A link-budget-limited wireless communication device (UE) may implement improved radio link monitoring procedures for enhancing the link-budget of the UE. The UE may monitor the radio link and may determine whether the radio link can support a lowest acceptable link quality according to a hysteresis-based comparison that uses threshold values to determine error rates associated with a physical control channel. The UE may also identify itself to the network as a link-budget-limited device, and the network may enable special link-budget enhancing features for the UE, including boosting the power of the resource elements (REs) carrying physical channel signaling/data to the UE. The UE may detect the presence of power boost and may estimate/determine the power boost level. The UE may modify the threshold values based on the power boost detection and/or results of the power boost level estimation/determination, and may use the modified threshold values for determining radio link quality during radio link monitoring.

Abstract: Apparatus and methods of performing a network cell transition for a voice over long term evolution (VoLTE) capable mobile device. Initially, the mobile device can detect a call initiation event. Thereafter, the mobile device determines whether a radio signal power associated with its serving LTE network base station is less than a radio access technology (RAT) specific threshold (i.e., an LTE-specific threshold). In a scenario where the radio signal power is less than the RAT-specific threshold the mobile device can effectuate a transition to an available neighbor network base station employing a legacy RAT, prior to establishing a voice call. When the mobile device is in a radio resource control (RRC) connected mode the network cell transition may be associated with an induced network handover procedure. Alternatively, when the mobile device is in an RRC idle mode the network cell transition may be associated with network reselection procedure.

The method includes receiving a specification for a connected discontinuous reception (C-DRX) cycle, the specification indicating when a plurality of onDurations of the C-DRX cycle occurs, the onDurations having a predetermined interval therebetween, receiving data at a known time relative to the C-DRX cycle, determining a modification to a conversion process that converts the data to data packets such that the data packets are stored in a buffer at a subframe immediately preceding one of the onDurations subsequent to the known time, performing the conversion process based upon the modification and storing the data packets at the subframe immediately preceding the one of the onDurations. In one embodiment, the data is raw audio data and the data packets are audio packets.

Abstract: This disclosure relates to techniques for UEs (including link budget limited UEs) to improve communications performance with a cellular network. A UE may be configured to provide a request (for a first process executed by the UE) for a high-bandwidth connection to a base station of a cellular network during a first RRC connection. In some embodiments, the RRC connection is established by another process. In some embodiments, the UE is configured to receive signaling from the base station indicating that the base station cannot satisfy the high-bandwidth connection request and the UE is configured not to send or receive data for the high-bandwidth connection during the first RRC connection in response to the signaling. In some embodiments, the UE is configured to re-send the request on a second, subsequent RRC connection that is not established by the first process. In some embodiments, the UE is configured to opportunistically re-send the request on subsequent RRC connections established by one or more other processes until the base station is able to grant the request.

Abstract: Some embodiments relate to a user equipment (UE) configured to modify at least one signal strength threshold value to provide improved operation for link budget limited devices when performing cell selection or reselection. In some embodiments, the UE may receive a threshold value indicating a minimum received signal strength for camping on a cell. The UE may determine an offset value based on operating parameters of the UE, and may determine a modified threshold value by applying the offset value to the received threshold value. The UE may then compare the modified threshold value to a signal strength measurement of a signal received from a base station associated with the cell. The UE may camp on the cell if the modified threshold value is less than the signal strength measurement, and not camp on the cell if the modified threshold value is greater than the signal strength measurement.
