Abstract: The preparation of a finely-divided carotinoid or retinoid suspension comprises dissolving the material in a volatile water-miscible organic solvent at 50-250 degrees C (optionally under increased pressure) within 10 seconds and then immediately mixing the solution with an aqueous medium at 0-90 degrees C in the absence of protective colloid and in the presence of a physiologically acceptable emulsifier. Also claimed is a finely-divided carotinoid or retinoid suspension free from protective colloid contains an emulsifier chosen from lecithin, mono-, di- or tri-glycerides of aliphatic (optionally acetylated) polycarboxylic acids (eg citric or tartaric acid) or ascorbyl palmitate.

Abstract: Finely dispersed carotenoid or retinoid suspensions are prepared by dissolving the carotenoid or retinoid is a volatile, water-miscible organic solvent at 50.degree.C-250.degree.C, where appropriate under elevated pressure, within less than 10 sec and immediately thereafter mixing the solution with an aqueous medium at from 0 to 90.degree.C, wherein the mixing with the aqueous medium takes place in the absence of a protective colloid and in the presence of at least one physiologically tolerated emulsifier.

Abstract: Process for producing finely divided, essentially amorphic colorant or active compound preparations by converting a relatively coarsely particulate dispersion or a solution into a colloidal distribution state in water, the colloidal distribution being generated at a temperature above the melting point of the colorant or active compound by adding appropriately hot water (if necessary under pressure) or an aqueous protective colloidal solution, so that an emulsion is formed of a melt in an aqueous medium, which emulsion is immediately spray-dried or is converted into a suspension by cooling.

Abstract: Pulverulent water-dispersable carotenoid formulations in which the carotenoid is dissolved in an edible oil and the oil solution is in the form of small droplets are prepared by a process in which a carotenoid is rapidly dissolved in a volatile, water-miscible, organic solvent at from 50 to 240.degree.C, together with from 1.5 to 20 times the weight, based on the carotenoid, of an edible oil, and an emulsifier, under atmospheric or superatmospheric pressure, the hydrophilic solvent component is transferred to the aqueous phase from the resulting molecular disperse solution by immediate mixing with an aqueous solution of a protective colloid at from 0 to 50.degree.C, the hydrophobic oil phase which contains the carotenoid in solution being formed as the microdisperse phase, and the resulting two-phase mixture is freed from the solvent and the water in a conventional manner. These formulations are in particular useful for coloring food and animal feeds.

The carotinoid is immediately precipitated, in a colloidally disperse form, from the molecularly disperse solution by rapidly mixing the latter with an aqueous solution of a swellable colloid at from 0 DEG C. to 50 DEG C., and the resulting dispersion is freed from the solvent and the dispersing medium in a conventional manner.
