    Abstract: 2-Amino-5-(phenyl-, phenylthio- or phenoxy-alkyl)-1,2,4-thiadiazole derivs. (I) are new. (Where Ar is an opt. substd. phenyl group (Ia) or is a naphthyl residue opt. substd. by halogen, 1-4C alkyl or 1-4C alkoxy; X is halogen, CN, NO2, 1-6C alkyl, 1-6C alkoxy, 1-4C haloalkyl, 1-4C haloalkoxy, 1-4C alkylthio, 1-4C alkylsulphonyl, 3-6C cycloalkyl, phenyl or opt. halo-substd. aryloxy; m is 0,1,2,3 or 4; R1 and R2 are H, 1-10 C alkyl, 3-8C cyclo-alkyl, 2-5C alkoxyalkyl, phenyl, benzyl or 2-phenylethyl, or R1 and R2 together represent an alkylene chain with up to 6 C-atoms which is opt. substd. by 1-4C alkyl and which opt. contains O as a chain member; A is 1-8C alkylene opt. substd. by 1-4C alkyl; Z is O orS: and n is 0 or 1; provided that (a) R1 and R2 are not both H when n is O, and (b) R2 is not H, n-butyl, allyl, cyclohexyl or phenyl when R1 is H and A is methylene opt.-substd. by 1-4C alkyl). The new cpds. are herbicides suitable for use as selective herbicides in various crops. Application may be pre- or post-emergence. Rate of application is generally 0.1-5 (pref. 1-3) kg/ha.

    Abstract: The sugar content of plants is increased by a method in which the plants are treated, from 1 to 15 weeks prior to harvesting, with a compound of the formula (I) (I) where R1 is alkyl of 1 to 4 carbon atoms, R2 is alkyl of 1 to 4 carbon atoms, unsubstituted or halogen-substituted alkenyl of 3 to 5 carbon atoms or alkynyl of not more than 5 carbon atoms, R3 is a non-aromatic heterocyclic structure which has 5 to 7 ring members and no double bonds or one double bond in a heterocyclic ring, contains 1 or 2 hetero atoms from the group consisting of sulfur and oxygen, and can be substituted by alkyl of not more than 3 carbon atoms, and X is H or C00-alkyl, or one of its plant-tolerated salts.
