The invention relates to salicylic acid derivatives of formula I, in which the substituents have the following meaning: A is a five membered heteroaromatic with a oxygen atom, nitrogen atom or sulphur atom or with one to four nitrogen atoms or with one to two nitrogen atoms and additionally a sulphur atom or an oxygen atom in the ring which can carry at least one -B-R5 group and additionally one or a plurality of the following substituents: nitro, halogen, cyano, optionally substituted alkyl, alkyl thio, alkyl sulfonyl, alkyl sulfinyl, formyl or a R5 group; a six membered hereroaromatic with two to three nitrogen atoms in the ring which can carry at least one -B-R5 group and additionally one or a plurality of the following substituents: nitro, halogen, cyano, optionally substituted alkyl, alkyl thio, alkyl sulfonyl, alkyl sulfinyl, formyl or a R5 group; B is oxygen, sulphur, SO, SO¿2?; X is oxygen or sulphur; Y is nitrogen or C-H; Z is nitrogen or a C-R?4¿ grouping, the substituents R?1, R2, and R3¿ having the meaning given in claim 1. The invention also relates to a process for the preparation of these derivatives, herbicidal agents and a method of controlling undesirable vegetation.

A process for controlling undesirable plant growth and for regulating plant growth consists of applying 4-methyl-5H-indeno[1,2-b]-pyridine and 1-methyl-9H-indeno[2,1-c]pyridines having formula (I), in which X, Y, Z and the residues R1 to R5 have the following meaning: R1 stands for hydrogen, alkyl, a COR6 group, in which R6 stands for alkyl; R2-R5 stand for: (a) hydrogen; (b) halogen; (c) nitro; (d) COOR6; (e) CONH¿2? and CONR?6R7¿, in which R?6 and R7¿ stand for alkyl; (f) optionally substituted alkyl; (g) alkenyl; (h) alkoxy; (i) hydroxy; (j) amino or NR6R7; (k) optionally substituted phenyl; X, Y stand for N, N?+-O- or CR8¿, in which R8 stands for hydrogen, C¿1?-C2-alkyl, COOH or COOR?6¿, with the proviso that only one nitrogen atom or N-oxide group be contained in the ring.

Also disclosed are the salts and esters of these compounds with acids, except for 2-(4-chloro-2-nitrobenzoyl)-5-dimethoxymethyl-5-methyl-cyclohexan-1,3-dione, and their use as herbicides and growth regulators.
