    Abstract: PURPOSE: To improve electron emitting properties and durability by carrying out activation treatment after an electron emitting part is formed by electrification to a conductive thin film which communicates element electrodes formed on a substrate with each other. CONSTITUTION: After materials for element electrodes are deposited on a sufficiently cleaned substrate 1, a pair of opposed element electrodes 4, 5 are formed by photolithographic method. After that, an organometal solution is applied to the resulting substrate, heated and baked to form a conductive thin film 3 which communicates the element electrodes 4, 5. Then, electricity is applied between the element electrodes 4, 5 to partly damage, deform or denature the thin film 3 to form an electron emitting part 2. Furthermore, the obtained substrate is activated by applying voltage under the atmosphere containing an organic compound while the voltage being increased from voltage lower than foaming voltage to voltage higher than the foaming voltage continuously or step by step at 0.1-1.0V/minute increasing ratio.

    Abstract: PURPOSE: To perform a foaming process quickly, uniformly, and with less heat emission by installing an electric charge accumulator in a position confronting one of the element electrodes with a dielectric substance interposed, allowing the accumulator to make discharge, and therewith forming an electron emission part in an electroconductive film. CONSTITUTION: A changeover switch 404 is closed so that a power supply 401 is connected with one 4 of the element electrodes. Because a base board 1 of dielectric substance is interposed between an electroconductive body 405 and the element electrodes 4, 5 and an electroconductive thin film 3, positive electric charges are produced at the surfaces of the electrodes 4, 5, and charges are accumulated in capacitance components 402, 403. Then the changeover switch 404 is turned so that the electrode 4 and electroconductive body 405 are connected together. Thereby the electric charges accumulated in the electrode 4 are released directly through a shortcircuit, while the electric charges accumulated in the electrode 5 are discharged through the thin film 3, in which Joule's heat is produced and foaming takes place. Thus an electron emission part 2 is formed. According to these procedures, the foaming process can be ended quickly through a single cycle of operations.

    Abstract: PURPOSE:To provide an electron emitting element wherein an electron emitting amount and electron emitting efficiency are improved by arranging fine grains in contact with an electrode and fine grains of different material containing an element of large atomic weight in noncontact with the electrode between the electrodes on a substrate. CONSTITUTION:A pair of electrodes 12, 13 are arranged with an about 0.1 to 100mum space part 14 on a substrate 11 consisting of insulating material of glass or the like. A fine grain film 15 consisting of conductive material of about ten several Angstrom to several mum grain size is arranged in contact with these electrodes 12, 13. In a discontinuity part of this fine grain film 15, fine grains 16 of different material containing an element of atomic weight larger than the element, contained in the fine grain film 15, are locally arranged in noncontact with the electrodes 12, 13. This different material fine grain 16 has a 10Angstrom to 10mum grain size, further preferable containing a low work function material. In this way, an electron emitting element, improving an element characteristic of electron emitting amount, electron emitting efficiency, etc., further with good uniformity and repeatability, is obtained.

Succeedingly, however a driving voltage for lighting fluorescent bodies 122 according to the desired display pattern is impressed on them, in the case of successively scanning surface conduction type electron emitting elements arranged in a simple matrix, a voltage of, for example, 7V or 0V is impressed on them while other lines are scanned. Then, electron beams are made to be emitted to lighting fluorescent bodies by impressing the voltage of not less than Vth on halfway.

Even in case the element electrodes 4, 5 are shortcircuited, it can be repaired by thermally breaking the wiring 105.
