    Abstract: Disclosed are an apparatus for and a method of recording images on a recording medium by utilizing a transfer medium (1) having a transfer layer whose transfer characteristics are caused to change by the application of a first energy and a second energy which differs from the first energy. The image recording apparatus includes a conveying device for conveying the transfer medium (1), a recording section disposed along the conveying path of the transfer medium conveyed by the conveying device, the recording section having a first energy applying device for applying the first energy to the transfer medium (1) and a second energy applying device for applying the second energy to the transfer medium (1), a transfer section having a heating device and a pressure applying device used to transfer the image formed on the transfer medium (1) in the recording section on the recording medium (8), and a fixing section for fixing the image transferred on the recording medium (8) in the transfer section to the recording medium (8). The fixing section applies heat and pressure to the recording medium (8), and either of the heat and pressure or both of them is set to a value or values which is higher than that of the heat or pressure or both of them applied in the transferred section. The image recording method includes the steps of applying the first energy and the second energy to the transfer medium (1), transferring the image formed on the transfer medium (1) by the energy applying step to the recording medium (8), and fixing the image transferred to the recording medium (8) in the transfer step to the recording medium (8). Heat and pressure are applied to the recording medium (8) in the fixing step, and either of the heat and pressure or both of them applied to the recording medium (8) in the fixing step is set to a value or values which is higher than that of the heat or pressure or both of them employed in the transfer step.

    Abstract: A dye transfer imaging method uses a transfer sheet provided with a sublimable dye whose vapourisability changes when placed under the simultaneous influence of two different forms of energy input. Subsequent transfer of dye to an image receiving substrate is therefore modulated by whether or not selected areas have been so influenced. The influences may be both heat and light, and in a multi colour embodiment each dye is selectively sensitive to a respective light source colour. In a three colour apparatus (Fig. 2) the transfer sheet 1 is passed via imaging (3) and transfer (4) stations. At the imaging station a thermal recording head 3b (of known kind) acts in coordination with three light sources (3c, 3d, 3e) to differentially selectively inhibit the vapourisability of three sublimable dyes. At a subsequent transfer with hot roller 4a, a three colour image is transferred in one step. At the transfer station the transfer sheet and imaging substrate may be in contact or slightly separated. The formulations of various examples of transfer sheet are given.
