Abstract: PURPOSE:To obtain a dispersant with improved dispersion properties by fractionating a naphthalenesulfonic acid/formaldehyde condensate or a salt thereof with a mixed solvent of three components including water and dissolving and removing a low-MW fraction thereby. CONSTITUTION:A mixed solvent of water, a polar solvent (a) of a solubility index of 12.3-14.5 and a nonpolar solvent (b) of a solubility index of 8.8-9.6 with a compositional ratio of water:a:b of (5-15):(80-90):(1-10) (by vol.) is added to a naphthalenesulfonic acid/formaldehyde condensate (NSF) or a salt thereof to dissolve and remove a low-MW fraction thereof. It is pref. that for a highly- condensed NSF or a salt thereof with a weight-average MW of 7,000-12,000 a fraction of an MW distribution characteristic F value >=900 occupies at least 90 areal% and for a moderately condensed NSF or a salt thereof with a weight- average MW of 2,000-5,000, a fraction of an MW distribution characteristics F value >=900 occupies at least 75 areal% by said mixed solvent treatment.

Abstract: PURPOSE:To obtain the subject compound useful as a synthetic raw material for naphthol and synthetic raw material for intermediate of azo dye, by carrying out the sulfonation reaction of naphthalene while selectively separating produced water from the reaction system using an inorganic porous membrane. CONSTITUTION:Naphthalenesulfonic acid is produced by sulfonating naphthalene with sulfuric acid as the sulfonation agent while selectively separating the produced water from the reaction system using an inorganic porous separation membrane having a pore diameter of 10Angstrom -1.0mum. The material of the inorganic porous separation membrane is alumina or silica alumina. The separation membrane is formed into a tube and the water is separated by passing the reaction liquid through the tube under a pressure of 2-10kg/cm . The process for the removal of sulfuric acid is unnecessary because the sulfonation reaction suppresses the content of by-produced dinaphthylsulfone and the excess sulfuric acid can be decreased without using a solvent.

Abstract: PURPOSE:To contrive improvement of dispersibility simply by carrying out chemical reaction, by subjecting a melaminesulfonic acid formalin polycondensate or a salt thereof to oxidative polymerization at a specific pH and constituting the dispersing agent from the resultant product having a specified molecular weight distribution breadth. CONSTITUTION:This dispersing agent consists of a product, obtained by subjecting melaminesulfonic acid formalin polycondensate or a salt thereof to oxidative polymerization reaction at pH>=7 to and having 6-2mol.wt. distribution breadth expressed by the ratio (Mw/Mn) of the weight-average molecular weight (Mw) to the number-average molecular weight (Mn). A reaction technique accompanied by electron transfer can be normally applied to the above- mentioned oxidative polymerization reaction. For example, a reaction with a peroxide, ozone, light, etc., can be used. The value of the molecular weight distribution breadth can be regulated to a narrow value and the molecular weight can be regulated to a value useful for dispersibility without carrying out fractionating operation.
