Abstract: PURPOSE:To dehydrate water slurry of water-insoluble metallic hydroxide extremely efficiently and economically by adding a specific anionic surfactnat to said slurry. CONSTITUTION:The alcohol expressed by R-OH (R is an alkyl group or an alkenyl group of 2-24) and maleic acid are esterified in the presence of a catalyst such as alkali to synthesize monoalkyl ester or dialkyl ester. Acid sodium sulfite is added to the monalkyl ester or dialkyl ester and is heated, whereby the anionic surfactent expressed by the formulaIis obtd. Said surfactant is added at about 10-1,000ppm in water slurry of metallic hydroxides. It is equally well to substitute a part of the anionic surfactant with the nonionic surfactant expressed by the formula II by using the alcohol expressed by R'-OH as a starting material, and adding alkylene oxide of 2-24 C thereto in the presence of a catalyst such as alkali.

Abstract: PURPOSE:The titled copolymer having excellent ability to disperse inorganic pigments and an ability to chelate calcium ions, prepared by copolymerizing (meth) acrylic acid with a specified excess molar amount of maleic acid in an aqueous solution maintained at a specified pH. CONSTITUTION:A copolymer satisfying the relationships: r=1.15-2.7, MW= 1,000-8,000 and rXMW>=3,000, wherein r is a maleic acid/(meth)acrylic monomer mol ratio and MW is an average MW, is produced by copolymerizing materials consisting of (meth)acrylic acid and 1.2-1.3mol, per mol of (meth)acrylic acid, of maleic acid in an aqueous solution adjusted at a pH of 3.5-5.0 with an alkali metal hydroxide and, if necessary, neutralizing the resulting copolymer. In prior arts, a copolymer having a MW>=1,000 has not been obtained in case where said mol ratio exceeds 1, but it can be obtained by carrying out the copolymerization in an aqueous solution at an adjusted pH. This copolymer is useful as a calcium ion scavenger, especially a scale-preventing agent.

CONSTITUTION:As a dispersant component for the aqueous slurry of coal powder, having good fluidity, an anionic surfactant of the formula I [where R is a C4-22 aliphatic hydrocarbon group, l and n are each 0 to 150 (but l+n=2-150), m is 2-150 (but l+m+n=5-200), p is 1-3 (valency of pair ion M), and M is a mono- or trivalent cation], prepared by a method in which ethylene oxide and propylen oxide and added in blocks or partly blocked state to an alcohol or hydroxylated aromatic compound, and the addition product is subjected to sulfurization followed by salt-forming reaction, is used. Thus, the pipeline transportation of coal powder is made possible because the use of the dispersant makes the fluidity of aqueous slurry of coal powder better.

Abstract: PURPOSE:To suppress heat generation by oxidation, etc. and to prevent of spontaneous combustion of coal, by spraying an aqueous emulsion consisting essentially of a water-insoluble polymer, surface active agent, and water retentive agent on heaped coal so that a film having improved wetting properties, slightly causing cracks, is formed on the coal. CONSTITUTION:(A) 50-98wt% Water-insoluble polymer, e.g., vinyl acetate type polymer, etc. is blended with (B) 1-30wt% surface active agnet and (C) 1- 30wt% water retentive agent, e.g., lower alcohol, glycerol, etc. to give an aqueous emulsion consisting of 0.05-10wt% (preferably 0.5-5wt%) three components. A compound shown by the formula I (R1 is 8-18C alkyl, etc.; p is 3-100), and a compound shown by the formula II (R2 is 8-12C alkyl, etc.; q is 3-100) are especially preferable as the component B. In spraying, the heap of the coal and the spray of the emulsion are repeated alternately during piling the coal, so that the emulsion is effectively sprayed in layer state.

Abstract: PURPOSE:To granulate coal powder in a compacted form in a short time and at the same time remove ash in the coal, by adding an oil as a binder together with a specific cationic or betaine type surfactant to the slurry of coal powder. CONSTITUTION:The aqueous slurry of coal powder is mixed with an oil (A) as a binder and 0.01-5.0wt% (based on coal) cationic surfactant (B) of formula I (where R1 is a C8-C22 alkyl or alkenyl group, R2 is a C1-C22 alkyl, alkenyl, or benzyl group, and X is a halogen), e.g., octyltrimethylammonium chloride, etc., or a betaine type surfactant of formula II (where R3 is a C8-C22 alkyl or alkenyl group). Then, the mixture is stirred by a high-speed blender, etc., for granulation, and then filtered to obtain granulated coal. USE:The granulated coal obtained is used as such or after being mixed with an oil as a fuel.

CONSTITUTION:An anionic surfactant represented by the formula, wherein R is a C4-22 (un)saturated aliphatic group, a C4-18 substituted alkyl-containing alkyl- substituted aromatic hydrocarbon group, 1 and (n) are each 0-150, 1+n is 2-150, (m) is 2-150, 1+m+n is 5-200, (p) is 1-3 and M is a mono-to trivalent cation, is prepared by adding at least two alkylene oxides to an aliphatic alcohol or an aromatic hydroxy compound, so as to form (partial) blocks, and then sulfating the terminal OH groups. To a coal/water slurry, concentration 20-85wt%, is added 0.01-5.0wt% said anionic surfactant as a granulating agent. Then, the coal powder is granulated.

Abstract: PURPOSE:To present an aqueous dispersion stabilizer which is obtained by converting an ester of sulfuric or phosphoric acid the compound obainable by adding propylene oxide and ethylene oxide to specific active hydrogen compound and which is superior in dispersion effect and does not cause hard caking of precipitate. CONSTITUTION:The compound obtainable by adding propylene oxide then ethylene oxide to the hydroxy compound, such as glycerol, and trimethylol propane, having 3 or more of active hydrogen is sulfated or phosphated. This yields the water-base dispersion stabilizer which is expressed by the formula [I], has superior dispersion effect to fine powder and does not make any hard cake when precipitate. In the formula, A denotes the residual groups after deducting active hydrogen from the compound having x atoms of active hydrogen in one molecule, X is -OSO3M, -OPO3M2 or (=O2PO2M)1/2 and M denotes alkali metal ions or quaternary ammonium ions.
